Nurturing love for homeland from practical lessons

By creatively inviting artists to teach classes or organizing classes right in the community, Cam An High School (Bao Ai commune) has helped foster love for the homeland and responsibility to the community in each student.

Cam An High School currently has 20 classes with 904 students and 43 staff, teachers and employees. Located in Bao Ai, where many ethnic minorities such as Tay and Cao Lan live, with diverse cultural characteristics, the school clearly recognizes the importance of incorporating local identity into teaching.

Identifying that local education is not only about imparting pure knowledge but also a journey of perception, practice and creativity, the school's Board of Directors has initiated a movement of innovation in teaching local education programs. With the goal of equipping students with basic understanding of the province's traditional history, culture, socio- economic characteristics, environment and career orientation; at the same time, forming capacity and qualities according to the requirements of the 2018 General Education Program.

Teacher Luu Khanh Linh - Principal of the school said: "The school considers local education as a means to create opportunities for students to approach reality, experience emotions, exploit existing experiences and apply knowledge and skills to solve practical problems in the family and community. From experiences, students transform experiences into new knowledge, improve creativity and adaptability - which is especially necessary for students in rural areas who are prone to low self-esteem and inferiority complex."

In recent times, the school has organized many attractive local educational topics and programs that have attracted a large number of students, such as: the topic "Socio-economic characteristics of the locality and future career orientation" for grade 12, helping students visualize career development paths suitable to the province's potential, linking job opportunities with local products; the program "Preserving and maintaining dances of the Cao Lan ethnic group in Tan Huong commune, Yen Binh district, Yen Bai province", inviting artisans to teach and organize performances for students to directly experience and practice; "Performing the Long Tong Festival and performing arts to promote Dai Minh grapefruit specialties" combining traditional cultural elements and promoting local agricultural products.

Students participate in performing arts at extracurricular activities.

These activities not only take place in the classroom but are also organized at historical sites, craft villages, museums, and production facilities, such as: visiting Coi village, Tan Huong commune (now Bao Ai commune), Yen Bai provincial museum (old), Uncle Ho's memorial site, Nguyen Thai Hoc's mausoleum; inviting Cao Lan artisans to teach ancient dances; inviting writers, poets, painters, businessmen... to chat and exchange.

The connection between school and community has turned lessons into vivid experiences, easily touching emotions, memories and pride of origin.

Along with that, Cam An High School pays special attention to project-based teaching methods, practical experiences, and performances - transforming theoretical knowledge into topics and suggestive tasks for students to build their own learning products. Students are encouraged to research, discuss, practice, design products, present and perform.

Many of their projects have become scientific research products, participating in and winning high prizes at the Science and Technology Innovation Competition for high school students, such as: The project "Preserving and maintaining dances of the Cao Lan ethnic group in Tan Huong commune" by Lac Thi Nhu Quynh (class 10C1) and Nguyen Hong Ngoc (class 10A1) won third prize at the Provincial Science and Technology Innovation Competition for high school students in the 2024-2025 school year.

Ms. Linh added that the school has changed the way of assessment, encouraging students with constructive comments; encouraging regular testing and assessment through questions and answers, writing, presentations, and practice; and periodically testing through products, projects, and practice exercises. This assessment method aims to recognize students' practical ability, positive attitude, creativity, and ability to apply knowledge to life.

The changes in teaching methods and educational environment have borne clear fruit. 100% of students were rated “Pass” after completing local education topics; many showed a deeper understanding of local culture, language, communication and behavioral skills.

A typical example is Hoang Quang Trung, grade 12 (school year 2024 - 2025) - orphaned, expressed his dream of becoming an architect through an A0 drawing in a local education class. Encouraged and accompanied by teachers, in the recent university entrance exam, Trung received a scholarship from Hanoi University of Civil Engineering and became an excellent student.

Or like Ha Linh (from a poor family), who spoke eloquently about the way out of poverty through knowledge in a local education class that moved the students in the school, has now become a Chinese language student at Hung Vuong University, achieved the title of excellent student, was admitted to the Party and won the 2024 national Chinese language competition.

Dao Xuan Quy once shared his desire to develop programming to serve his homeland. He is currently a student at FPT University and won the championship at VPBank Technology Hackathon with a group of friends...

The graduation results of the 2024-2025 school year marked an important turning point. For the first time, Cam An High School achieved a university admission rate of 46%, while previously it only fluctuated at 20-25% per year.

Ms. Luu Khanh Linh - Principal of the school is proud: the school's innovations not only meet the requirements of skills and knowledge education, but also conform to the strategic orientation of the Party and Government in implementing Resolution 71 on "Breakthrough in education and training development". Cultivating indigenous culture - the core value of the locality - is the way the school contributes to forming the qualities, personality and cultural mettle of the young generation, thereby nurturing the spirit of building the homeland.

Innovation in teaching and learning the local education program at Cam An High School has become a real driving force for transformation for students in rural areas. From inspiring cultural pride, helping students realize their own value, to opening up opportunities for learning, career and entrepreneurship, it is the foundation for the young generation of Cam An to firmly integrate and create the future.
