Indonesian football shaken by match-fixing scandal ahead of Asian Cup 2023

According to Indonesian media, the arrests were made on December 20 and attracted the attention of fans in the country as they took place right at the time the national team arrived in Türkiye to train in preparation for the 2023 Asian Cup.

Mr. Vigit Waluyo (center) was arrested for questioning.

Suara newspaper reported that 3 suspects were arrested in connection with the match-fixing of some matches in the Indonesian 2nd Division (Liga 2) in 2018. Among them, one of the people arrested to serve the investigation was a man named VW, the abbreviation of Vigit Waluyo; the other 2 suspects were DRN (Dewanto Rahadmoyo Nugroho) and KM (Kartiko Mustikaningtyas).

According to Indonesian media, the investigation agency has decided to temporarily detain 3 suspects to take statements, facilitating the investigation process. The interrogation began at 10:00 on December 20 regarding the connection between the 3 suspects and others in the case.

Vigit Waluyo is suspected of receiving IRD 100 million (nearly VND 160 million) for each match fixing. He was also a suspect in a similar case in 2019 when he was the owner of PS Mojokerto Putra (PSMP) Club.

Head of the Indonesian Police's Football Mafia Investigation Unit, Dani Kustoni, said he hoped the arrests would serve as a deterrent to prevent similar incidents from happening in the future.

5 Perserang Serang Club players fined in 2021 related to match-fixing

In 2021, the Disciplinary Committee of the Indonesian Football Association (PSSI Komdis) issued a penalty to 5 players of the Perserang Serang Club for attempting to fix the scores of some matches in the country's second division (Liga 2). Accordingly, these 5 players were banned from playing and coming to the field from 24 months to 60 months including: Eka Dwi Susanto, Fandy Edy, Ivan Julyandhy, Aray Suhendri and Ade Ivan Hafilah.

In 2015, former Indonesian football star Johan Ibo was arrested by police for allegedly bribing players to fix a football match in the country’s top division. He was caught red-handed trying to bribe players from Pusamania Borneo FC to fix the match against Persebaya Surabaya…
