According to this platform, the theme of this year’s World Tourism Day is “Tourism and Sustainable Transformation” which highlights the growing trend of responsible tourism and environmental awareness. Booking.com’s Tourism and Sustainability 2025 Report also shows a strong shift towards more conscious tourism. More than half of Vietnamese travelers (69%) are now concerned about the impact of tourism not only on the environment but also on the local community; 79% want their spending to go back to contribute to the local economy and 83% hope that each of their trips will contribute to improving the destination for the better.
In response to this trend, Booking.com suggests destinations in Vietnam that have been making significant strides to help both tourists and locals join hands to create a more sustainable tourism future. These include Ba Vi (Hanoi), Con Dao (Ho Chi Minh City) and Ninh Binh.
Melia Ba Vi Mountain Retreat 2 Resort attracts tourists with its responsible tourism element. |
Booking.com believes that Ba Vi is a living proof of the harmony between nature and culture. Tourists can trek through bamboo forests, explore waterfalls hidden in the mountains or learn about the culture and traditions of the Muong and Dao ethnic groups when visiting handicraft villages. Oriented to become a national tourism center in the future, Ba Vi has been making efforts to promote the development of eco-tourism, health care resorts and sustainable agriculture, both preserving the mountains and forests and creating livelihoods for the local community.
Meanwhile, Con Dao is one of the most important sea turtle conservation areas in the country, with many programs to protect sea turtle nesting grounds and maintain the largest green turtle population in Southeast Asia. Visitors can witness turtles laying eggs under the stars, join rangers in releasing baby turtles back to the sea and participate in community activities to protect the ecosystem here. In addition to the rich marine ecosystem, Con Dao is also rich in historical value with many cultural relics and orientations for sustainable tourism development thanks to the cooperation of the community and environmentally friendly resorts.
As part of Vietnam’s focus on eco-tourism and community-based tourism, Ninh Binh has pioneered sustainable initiatives such as limiting the number of tourist boats in Tam Coc-Bich Dong and encouraging locals to operate and develop homestays. These efforts protect the fragile natural ecosystem while preserving ancient village traditions. Visitors can row a boat in Van Long Nature Reserve, cycle through rice paddies next to limestone mountains, or immerse themselves in rural life by visiting traditional markets, taking cooking classes, and experiencing farming activities.
