British sailor April Boyes shared a video of a pod of killer whales swimming close to and pushing against the yacht in an attack, causing another person to scream in terror. They surrounded the yacht off the coast of Gibraltar on May 26 before ramming it multiple times. Each ramming caused more damage to the boat, destroying the rudder and puncturing the hull. The attack from the killer whales caused water to flood into the boat's engine room, forcing the crew to call authorities for help, according to Yahoo .

The four sailors were finally able to breathe a sigh of relief when a Spanish rescue ship and helicopter arrived in the middle of the night. They were rescued by the coastguard and the 20m yacht was towed to the port of Barbate in Cadiz province for repairs.

"The encounter seemed unique and ended with the killer whale destroying the rudder from the boat, then biting at various parts of the boat for an hour. The large hole in the hull caused water to flood into other parts of the boat and the engine room. It was a terrifying experience. We are all safe. I am very grateful to the Coast Guard," Boyes said.

The incident comes after at least 20 killer whales attacked a small boat in the Strait of Gibraltar this month. Researchers speculate that a female killer whale named White Gladis, injured in a collision with a ship, taught her mates to attack vessels around Gibraltar. They believe White Gladis is taking revenge by instructing the pod of killer whales to sink two cruise ships. The pain from collisions or being caught in fishing nets has made her hostile toward ships.

The attack on Boyes’s yacht shows that killer whales will not stop targeting small boats. On May 2, about six killer whales rammed the hull of the Bavaria 46 in the Strait of Gibraltar. The hour-long ambush left two passengers from Cambridge shocked and confused, and caused thousands of dollars in damage.
