Treatment methods for ptosis

Ptosis is a condition in which the upper eyelid falls lower than normal, partially or completely covering the pupil, affecting aesthetics and vision. This is a common disease in both children and adults, which can be congenital or acquired after eye trauma, complications after eye surgery, or neuromuscular disease.

Specialist Doctor I Vu Thi Minh (Hanoi - Dong Nai Eye Hospital, Tam Hiep ward, Dong Nai province) said: In children, if ptosis is not detected and treated early, children are at risk of amblyopia, strabismus or limited vision.

According to Dr. Minh, depending on the degree of ptosis and the cause of the disease, doctors will choose the appropriate treatment method for each patient. In particular, drug treatment is applied in cases of ptosis caused by systemic diseases such as myasthenia gravis and neurological diseases. Patients will be prescribed medication to control the underlying disease, combined with monitoring the condition of the eyelids. This is only a temporary solution, not a complete cure for mechanical ptosis.

Additionally, some eyeglass aids with lash lifts can be used to help patients improve their vision, often used when patients are not eligible for surgery or want a temporary solution.

Blepharoplasty is the most effective treatment method today, especially for congenital ptosis and severe ptosis. Commonly used techniques include: shortening the levator muscle (for patients with functional levator muscle, helping to shorten the muscle, raising the eyelid higher); suspension of the eyelid to the forehead muscle (applied when the levator muscle is weak or loses its function. The doctor uses thread or biological material to suspend the eyelid to the forehead muscle, helping to open the eye by moving the forehead muscle). In complex cases, the doctor can combine many techniques to achieve aesthetic and visual function.

Dr. Minh recommends: People with ptosis should not arbitrarily use drugs or folk remedies because they are ineffective and can even damage the eyes. Treatment requires an ophthalmologist to examine and diagnose the exact cause to come up with a suitable treatment plan. Thereby, helping patients regain bright eyes and be more confident in life.
