On the afternoon of May 12, Dang Tuan Hung, a student of class 8A3 at Cao Xa Secondary School, Lam Thao district, bravely saved a classmate who was drowning in the Thao River, which flows through Cao Xa commune.

At the time of the incident, the water level downstream of the Thao River was rising after heavy rain, with strong currents. Hung and his friends were playing near the riverbank when they discovered Son - a male friend in the group - had unfortunately slipped and fallen into the water and was showing signs of drowning. Without hesitation, Hung immediately jumped into the river, swam to his friend and brought him safely to shore. Immediately after, Hung performed CPR and quickly called for help from adults.

The Board of Directors and the Youth Union of Cao Xa Secondary School commended Dang Tuan Hung, a student of class 8A3, for his brave action in saving a drowning friend on May 12.

It is known that Dang Tuan Hung is an excellent member of the Cao Xa Secondary School swimming team, with proficient swimming and first aid skills. Thanks to his calmness and timely reaction, he saved his friend's life in the most dangerous moment.

In contrast to the above incident, a heartbreaking drowning accident occurred not long before, on November 18 at the Red River bank, in area 11, Hien Quan commune, Tam Nong district. A group of 6 students from class 8B, Hien Quan Secondary School invited each other to go to the river bank to play and unfortunately got into an accident. As a result, five students died from drowning, only one student was lucky to be rescued.

This is a particularly serious accident, leaving a huge loss to the family and the school, and once again emphasizing the level of danger when children play in water areas without adult supervision. The incident is a wake-up call for the urgent need to raise awareness and skills to prevent drowning for students.

Warning of the risk of drowning in the summer

"Training program on drowning prevention for children" is implemented by district youth unions when students enter summer vacation.

From the above incidents, it can be seen that swimming skills and emergency response ability are important factors in preventing drowning accidents, especially for children. Therefore, parents need to raise awareness of supervising their children, especially during the summer when children often play near water sources. Teaching children to swim from a young age and equipping them with knowledge about water safety is extremely important.

In addition to the efforts of families, educational institutions also need to be proactive in educating students about injury prevention, especially drowning. Schools need to promote propaganda, organize life skills classes, including drowning prevention skills and implement extracurricular activities to help students realize the importance of staying safe when participating in activities near ponds, canals, rivers and lakes.

Learn to swim, equip children with drowning prevention skills.

Meritorious Teacher Phung Quoc Lap - Deputy Director of the Department of Education and Training said: Right from the beginning of the school year, the Department has directed the whole sector to strengthen the work of preventing and combating drowning accidents; closely coordinate with the government and organizations to organize safe play activities, swimming classes and safety skills for students during the summer. Educational units proactively integrate propaganda content on drowning prevention and combat into teaching; organize training, seminars, competitions, and exchanges to raise awareness and skills for staff, teachers and students. Many schools have organized swimming lessons using smart assembled pools or linked with facilities with swimming pools in the area. Along with the participation of the education sector, the coordination of families and society is an important factor in ensuring children's safety. Managing and monitoring children, promptly detecting high-risk areas for drowning, along with building healthy play spaces will contribute to helping children have a safe and rewarding summer.

To ensure a safe summer for children, in addition to raising awareness of parents and teachers, the participation of organizations and communities in educating and protecting children is extremely necessary. Only when there is close coordination between family, school, society and correct awareness of children can the risk of tragic drowning that may occur be minimized.
