British police use AI cameras to detect traffic violations

Police in Cornwall, UK, are testing AI road safety camera systems from AI technology company Acusensus to detect traffic violations, such as drivers not wearing seat belts or texting while driving. In the first three days, the system detected nearly 180 cases of not wearing seat belts and 117 cases of using mobile phones while driving.

The system looks at traffic in deployed areas and then captures clear images of passing vehicles using high-speed shutters, infrared flashes, and lens and filter systems. AI then reviews the images, flagging those that are potentially in violation. The flagged photos are then sent to human moderators. If the law is determined to have been broken, the driver will receive a warning or prosecution, depending on the severity of the violation.

The Acusensus system has been trialled at multiple sites across the UK and Australia in 2022.

In 2022, another Acusensus system detected 590 seatbelt violations along with 45 mobile phone use incidents on various roads in Devon and Cornwall. However, the new AI camera system can be easily relocated, making it easier to monitor busy roads and expand the project.

AI surveillance systems are increasingly being used thanks to their ability to assist police 24/7. Earlier this year, another AI initiative in the UK wanted to install AI cameras along highways to “catch” drivers throwing rubbish out of car windows. The Barcelona subway system (Spain) uses AI video analysis to detect fare evaders, while the New York subway system (USA) has also recently started using similar AI software.
