Update on examination and assessment process of strabismus, from theory to clinical practice

Within the framework of the VNIO + HOOC 2025 Ophthalmology Conference that just took place, the Workshop on "Stragus and assessment of common eye movement disorders" attracted the participation of many doctors and students from many hospitals and eye clinics across the country.

This is considered one of the highlights of the conference, when it harmoniously combines in-depth theory and direct practice, giving attendees a comprehensive learning experience.

Dr. Nguyen Van Huy presented and opened the Workshop within the framework of the VNIO + HOOC Conference, opening a series of in-depth lectures delivered by doctors from the Central Eye Hospital.

This series of dedicated lectures helps students systematize the examination and assessment process of strabismus and ocular motility, which are basic processes but require precision and coordination of many techniques. The content does not stop at traditional examinations such as Hirschberg test, eye cover test, but also expands to comprehensive analysis of each aspect of vision from diplopia, fusion to stereoscopic vision.

In addition, leading experts at the Central Eye Hospital also update many new advances in current clinical approaches.

The lectures go into specific analysis of horizontal, vertical, and diagonal strabismus, and clearly guide the method of distinguishing between functional and paralytic strabismus, illustrated with real-life cases in examination.

In the sharing session, the doctors emphasized that the assessment of ocular motility and identification of related strabismus patterns should be performed in parallel with clinical examination, paying special attention to the patient's compensatory head posture, to ensure more accurate and comprehensive assessment results.

This comprehensive assessment helps the doctor determine the condition accurately, thereby orienting the appropriate and highly effective intervention method.

Dr. Huong, Central Eye Hospital guides students to practice on pediatric patients with Synoptophore device.

The highlight of the Workshop is the direct practice. Under the guidance of the instructor, students are divided into small groups and take turns going through the examination steps, using from basic tools and tests such as prisms, Maddox rods to modern specialized equipment.

Notable is the Synoptophore device of Inami (Japan), a familiar clinical device that helps accurately measure every small angle of strabismus, evaluate both objective and subjective strabismus angles, and at the same time support the recovery and training of visual function in amblyopic patients.

In parallel, the class also introduces the MDT amblyopia training set (Poland) with many new programs, creating conditions for students to access more diverse visual rehabilitation methods.

Doctors at the Central Eye Hospital guide students to practice on pediatric patients with the Synoptophore device. Thanks to the careful preparation of the Organizing Committee and the coordination of Thien Truong Company, the learning space is fully equipped, helping students not only listen to lectures but also have the opportunity to directly experience and practice clinical skills close to reality.

Professor Bruce D. Moore (striped shirt) examines and takes Quicksee scans on children.

Clinical situations are simulated right in the classroom, helping participants not only master theoretical knowledge but also practice directly on real patients.

In addition to the main contents of the Workshop, Thien Truong also brings to doctors the advanced, unique handheld refraction technology with an open environment, providing high accuracy especially in screening and evaluating refraction, pre-myopia/low hyperopia in children.

This technology is frequently used in the United States to evaluate refraction in young children, with the outstanding advantage of measuring aberration using the super-precise Hartmann-Shack wavefront combined with an open environment to minimize accommodation.

Thien Truong has collaborated with the University of Medicine and Professor Bruce D. Moore, the world's leading expert on refractive errors, to bring Quicksee closer to Vietnamese children as a reliable tool in the process of community examination and screening, contributing to improving the effectiveness of school vision examination and care.
