Due to the impact of storm No. 5, since the morning of August 26, Ngu Chi Son commune has experienced very heavy rain, causing landslides and localized flooding on some roads. Floodwaters in streams and creeks continue to rise, posing many potential dangers.
Notably, at around 12:30 on the same day, at Km40 of Provincial Road 155 (Ngu Chi Son Commune), a landslide occurred with a large amount of rock and soil, causing traffic congestion. Local authorities warned people to absolutely not move through this area to ensure safety.
According to the People's Committee of Ngu Chi Son commune, early this afternoon, heavy rain and floods in Can Ho Mong village swept away 2 people. Immediately after the incident, the local authorities and people organized a search. Currently, 1 injured person has been found and 1 person is still missing.
Recommendation: People need to urgently evacuate from areas at risk of landslides; do not walk along streams, cross streams, or overflow tunnels when it rains heavily to avoid unfortunate risks.
On August 26, 2025, due to the unpredictable weather due to the impact of storm No. 5, the Steering Committee for Natural Disaster Prevention and Search and Rescue of Tan Hop Commune inspected and evacuated 24 households at risk of landslides and flooding to a safe place. Of which, Dai Son village had 2 households, Da Dung village had 7 households, and Khe Phay village had 15 households. The households subject to evacuation were assisted by rescue forces to move people and their belongings to a safe place arranged by the village.
Due to the impact of storm No. 5, heavy rains lasting from the night of August 25 to the morning of August 26 caused heavy damage to people and property in Lao Cai province. According to a quick report from the Standing Office of the Provincial Steering Committee for Natural Disaster Prevention and Control and Search and Rescue (PCTT-TKCN), one person was injured, hundreds of houses were damaged and many areas of crops were destroyed.
Heavy rain over a large area, floods on rivers and streams rose
According to records, due to the influence of storm circulation No. 5 combined with strong high-altitude wind convergence, many areas in the province have had heavy to very heavy rain. The amount of rain measured from 7:00 p.m. on August 25 to 8:00 a.m. on August 26 was generally from 15 to 90 mm. Some places recorded exceptionally heavy rain such as Cao Pha (229.0 mm) and Ta Si Lang (229.6 mm).
Heavy rain has caused the water level on rivers and streams in the province to rise rapidly. The water level on Ngoi Hut River alone at 7am on August 26 exceeded the alarm level 1 by 0.19m. The meteorological agency forecasts that from today (August 26) to August 28, there will be a flood on rivers and streams with an amplitude of 2-5m, the flood peak may reach alarm level 2 and above alarm level 2.
Heavy damage to people and property
As of 11:00 a.m. on August 26, the province recorded 1 injured person in Khanh Yen commune and is currently being treated at the provincial general hospital.
The storm also caused serious damage to houses with a total of 708 houses affected, including:
* 02 houses completely collapsed in Phong Du Ha and Muong Bo.
* 15 houses had over 70% of their roofs blown off.
* 77 houses had their roofs blown off from 30% to 70%.
* 607 houses had less than 30% of their roofs blown off.
* In addition, there were 05 houses with landslides and 02 houses with minor damage.
To ensure safety, Phong Du Thuong commune authorities urgently evacuated 140 households from areas at risk of landslides and flash floods to safety.
Regarding agriculture , the total damaged area is 21,082 hectares, including more than 13,222 hectares of rice and 5.36 hectares of corn. Many other structures such as factories, schools, cultural houses and 0.4kV and 35kV power poles were also damaged and broken.
Total initial damage is estimated at about 5.5 billion VND.
Urgently overcome the consequences
Immediately after the disaster occurred, authorities at all levels quickly arrived at the scene, directed the recovery work according to the "four on-site" principle and helped people stabilize their lives. The Provincial Steering Committee for Disaster Prevention and Search and Rescue issued directives and continuously sent warning bulletins to localities for proactive prevention and avoidance.
Authorities are required to continue to closely monitor weather developments and coordinate with local authorities to be ready to respond to possible bad situations, ensuring the safety of people's lives and property.
Due to the impact of prolonged heavy rain caused by storm No. 5, from the night of August 25 to the morning of August 26, many areas in Lao Cai province experienced flash floods and landslides, affecting traffic and people's daily lives.
