The match between The Strongest and Blooming in the Bolivian National Championship ended with a 3-2 victory for the home team, but the aftermath of this encounter was a shocking fireworks incident.
The Strongest's decisive scorer, striker Juan Godoy, collapsed on the pitch after being hit in the genital area by a firework shortly after the final whistle.
The rocket-like projectile, called a "llorona," was set off by home fans in celebration in the stands. However, one of the projectiles hit Godoy, causing him to clutch his groin in pain and require medical help to leave the field.
Juan Godoy was hit by a firework straight into his private area.
According to El Deber newspaper, Godoy suffered first-degree burns to his thighs and a hematoma in his testicles. Doctors diagnosed him with traumatic orchitis. When the incident occurred, fans and staff from both teams panicked and ran off the field to avoid being hit by fireworks.
Many players have been in trouble because of fireworks.
The Strongest's fan group UltraSur was blamed. Some sources said this was an act of protest against the team's management, but UltraSur insisted they were only setting off fireworks to celebrate and issued a public apology: "We never intended to harm any player or coaching staff. We always want to cheer, not put anyone in danger."
Juan Godoy was rushed to hospital and warned of serious injuries
The Strongest Club issued a statement affirming that "the incident will not happen again" and said it is trying to find those directly responsible for the incident.
The UltraSur group has pledged not to set off fireworks at future matches. The incident is raising concerns about stadium security and the control of fireworks at soccer matches in Bolivia.
