The results announced by House of Representatives Speaker Nukaga Fukushiro later showed that Ms. Takaichi Sanae received 237 votes out of 465 valid votes, officially elected by the House of Representatives as the 104th Prime Minister of Japan and the first female Prime Minister since 1885 without the need for a second round of voting. The vote in the Senate then was mainly procedural, because according to regulations, if the vote result in the Senate is different from the House of Representatives, the vote result in the House of Representatives will be the final result.
The voting result was not unexpected as the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) and its new partner in the ruling coalition, the Japan Innovation Party (JIP), reached a consensus to support Ms. Takaichi to become Prime Minister of Japan, 1 day before the extraordinary session of the National Assembly.
Japan's new cabinet
The new cabinet is scheduled to be unveiled later that evening, following the Prime Minister's appointment and cabinet approval ceremonies at the Imperial Palace. The new Japanese Prime Minister will hold a press conference to explain the new administration's basic principles and key policies.
According to a VNA reporter in Tokyo, Japanese media reported that as of the morning of October 21, the new cabinet will have all three politicians who ran for the LDP presidency, namely former LDP Secretary General Motegi Toshimitsu as Foreign Minister; Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries Minister Koizumi Shinjiro as Defense Minister; Chief Cabinet Secretary Hayashi Yoshimasa as Internal Affairs and Communications Minister. In addition, former Defense Minister Minoru Kihara will take over as Chief Cabinet Secretary, and Satsuki Katayama as Finance Minister.
Ms. Takaichi, 64 years old, was first elected to the House of Representatives in 1993, and has held important positions in the government and in the Liberal Democratic Party such as Minister of Economic Security, Minister of Internal Affairs and Communications, and Chairman of the LDP Policy Research Council.
Thus, Ms. Takaichi is the 66th person to hold the position of Prime Minister of Japan, since the first Prime Minister, Mr. Ito Hirobumi, took office in 1885. The term of office of Prime Minister of Japan is calculated from the time the cabinet is formed until the simultaneous resignation, after the Prime Minister voluntarily resigns or when the National Assembly meets for the first time after the election of the House of Representatives.
In terms of hometown, Yamaguchi prefecture is the top with 8 people who have served as prime minister, while Tokyo is second with 5 people. Nara prefecture has its first prime minister from this locality after Ms. Takaichi was elected.
The youngest Prime Minister in Japanese history is Mr. Ito Hirobumi, who took office at the age of 44 years and 2 months. However, since the end of World War II, Mr. Abe Shinzo is the youngest Prime Minister when he was elected at the age of 52 and is also the longest-serving Prime Minister with 3,188 days.
