The Blues arrived at Molineux in good spirits after beating Newcastle on penalties to reach the semi-finals of the English League Cup. Manager Mauricio Pochettino used this hard-fought victory as a springboard to get 3 points against Wolves to maintain his hopes of chasing the top 4.
Chelsea disappointed again in the Premier League this season
Despite missing a number of stars due to injury, Chelsea created a good game against the "Wolves" in the first half. But the visitors had to blame themselves when Sterling, Palmer and Jackson failed to take advantage of some good opportunities to open the score.
Without a true striker, "The Blues" regretfully watched the opportunities pass by, before paying the price for a defensive error at the beginning of the second half. Wolves did not create many dangerous situations, but the home team knew how to make the most of their opponents' mistakes to score in the 51st minute. From a corner kick, Mario Lemina comfortably headed past goalkeeper Djordje Petrovic (Chelsea).
Coach Pochettino's future at Chelsea is increasingly uncertain
Some personnel adjustments by coach Pochettino and the "Wolves" proactively playing defense helped Chelsea to dominate the match after conceding the goal. However, once again, the attacking stars of "The Blues" were too unlucky in front of the opponent's goal. Even the visitors' hope of getting a point was extinguished with Matt Doherty's goal doubling the gap in the 90+3 minute. Therefore, Christopher Nkunku's goal 3 minutes later could not help coach Pochettino's team avoid their 8th defeat in the Premier League this season.
This result left Chelsea stuck in 10th place, 14 points behind the top 4. Mr. Pochettino continues to face a bleak future as the patience of the American owner is gradually running out.
Meanwhile, Wolves have recorded consecutive wins against Chelsea for the first time since 1975. This achievement helps Gary O'Neil's side extend their unbeaten run at Molineux this season to 7 and they are only behind Chelsea on goal difference.
