Dare to think, dare to do
When you come to Van Hoa commune, ask for the house of “Ms. Nam the dairy cow”, everyone will know. That is because Ms. Nam is the first person in Van Hoa commune to initiate the dairy cow farming model and currently, she has the largest herd of dairy cows in the commune with a total of 62 cows.
Ms. Nam’s dairy farm is over 1,200 square meters wide, with 3 rows of barns. The cement floor is clean, the surrounding area is airy and spacious. Hygiene conditions are guaranteed to not affect the health of the cows.
Ms. Nam said that raising dairy cows is more demanding than taking care of a baby. Every day, from dawn, she and her husband wake up to do their work. If they are not well cared for, the cows will become thin, sick, and their milk production will decrease, leading to “herd destruction” and bankruptcy.
Up to now, Ms. Nam has been involved in dairy farming for more than 20 years. The total herd is 62 cows, the largest in the commune; bringing in billions in profit each year. But to have the business as it is today, Ms. Nam had to go through many hardships.
To have capital to invest in dairy farming, the couple had to mortgage their land use right to borrow 20 million VND from the bank. “In 2003, 20 million VND was quite a large amount for a farmer. Seeing me borrowing so much, my father kept saying I was too reckless, because at that time no one dared to invest that much,” Ms. Nam shared.
No output worries
With the determination to get rich from dairy farming model, Ms. Nam's family actively applies science and technology to improve productivity and quality.
Up to now, her family has invested in a water spray system to prevent heat for the cows and automatic equipment worth more than 3 billion VND. In addition, they have built a waste treatment system to ensure biosafety in livestock farming.
Thanks to her mastery of care techniques, Ms. Nam's dairy cow herd has developed well, producing high milk yield and good quality milk. Up to now, her family farm has an average yield of 1 ton of milk per day.
Fortunately, Ms. Nam does not have to worry about output because a large milk company has set up a purchasing station. Thanks to the good quality, Ms. Nam’s family milk is often sold at a higher price.
Currently, the dairy cow farming model of Ms. Ta Thi Nam's family has a total revenue of 7.5 billion VND/year. With the profit earned from the dairy cow herd, Ms. Nam has invested in expanding the farming scale and buying more land. To proactively provide food for the cows, Ms. Nam has also invested in planting 3.5 hectares of grass.
Not only enriching her family, Ms. Nam’s dairy cow farming model also creates jobs for 17 seasonal workers. Each worker has an income of 7-10 million VND/person/month.
Talking about Ms. Ta Thi Nam, Chairman of the Farmers' Association of Van Hoa Commune, Le Trung Kien, said that currently, there are more than 1,000 households raising dairy cows in the commune, with a total herd of nearly 5,000 cows. Of which, the dairy cow farming model with Ms. Ta Thi Nam is the largest in the commune.
“For many consecutive years, Ms. Ta Thi Nam has been recognized as a good farmer and businesswoman at the Hanoi city level. She is a shining example of her efforts for local farmers to learn from…” - Mr. Le Trung Kien shared more.
“The application of high technology in dairy farming has helped improve the quality and yield of milk. Not only that, Ms. Nam also plays a pioneering role in linking with businesses that consume cow's milk. This is a decisive factor in helping farmers' products to be consumed stably at good prices, ensuring income for farmers…” - Chairman of the Farmers' Association of Ba Vi district Nguyen Van Truong .
