House Speaker McCarthy believes he will overcome the risk of losing his seat.

House Speaker McCarthy believes he will survive the threat of impeachment, after Congressman Matt Gaetz filed a motion to remove him from office.

"I'm an optimist. I believe in myself," Republican House Speaker Kevin McCarthy told CNBC today.

House Speaker McCarthy's comments came after Republican Representative Matt Gaetz filed a motion to impeach him on October 2. The House will have to vote on Gaetz's motion within two days, a move McCarthy said could take place as early as the afternoon of October 3.

Mr McCarthy needs at least 218 votes from the 435-member House of Representatives to remain in office. Republicans hold a majority in the House of Representatives with 221 seats, while Democrats hold 212 seats.

After the US House of Representatives on September 30 passed a bill to fund the US government for another 45 days, Mr. Gaetz and far-right Republicans expressed anger because it did not include the provisions they requested, including drastic spending cuts.

Democrats have not said whether they will vote against McCarthy or try to force him to concede to keep his seat. Many Democrats see McCarthy as untrustworthy after he broke a spending deal with President Joe Biden and green-lighted an impeachment inquiry.

"I would love to hear from every single Democrat in the House on the issue. Then we'll make a decision together," House Democratic leader Hakeem Jeffries told MSNBC .

Jeffries said he spoke with Chairman McCarthy on the night of October 2 but did not elaborate.
