President Luong Cuong receives US congressmen

According to the VNA special correspondent, within the framework of attending the high-level General Debate of the 80th Session of the United Nations General Assembly and bilateral activities in the United States, on the afternoon of September 23 (local time), President Luong Cuong received Senator Chris Coons - Senior Member of the US Senate Foreign Relations Committee, Congressman Brian Mast - Chairman of the US House Foreign Affairs Committee and Congressman Young Kim - Chairman of the Indo-Pacific Subcommittee.

During the meetings, President Luong Cuong expressed his delight at the strong development of Vietnam-US relations, especially after the two countries established a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership in September 2023; affirmed that Vietnam welcomes substantive results in implementing this framework, and emphasized Vietnam's commitment to building an independent, self-reliant and deeply integrated economy .

Receiving Congressman Brian Mast and Congressman Young Kim, President Luong Cuong affirmed that Vietnam consistently implements a foreign policy of independence, self-reliance, multilateralization, diversification, being a friend, a reliable partner, an active and responsible member in the international community; Vietnam always considers the United States a partner of strategic importance in the region and the world .

Sharing with Congressman Brian Mast about the achievements of the bilateral relationship over the past 30 years, President Luong Cuong affirmed that the Vietnam-US relationship is a typical model in international relations, showing that with determination, trust, mutual respect and shared common interests, countries can overcome the painful past to build a better future of cooperation and friendship, bringing benefits to the people of the two countries, actively contributing to peace, stability, cooperation and sustainable development in the region as well as globally.

Appreciating the role of the US Congress and Congressmen in the efforts to heal, reconcile, build trust and create a foundation to promote bilateral cooperation, President Luong Cuong asked Congressman Brian Mast and the US House Foreign Affairs Committee to continue to pay attention to, support and promote relations between the two countries in all fields, especially the cooperation channel between the two National Assemblies through delegation exchanges, dialogues and sharing of legislative experiences to help promote development in areas of mutual need and enhance trust.

Regarding cooperation in overcoming war consequences, President Luong Cuong highly appreciated the support of the US Government and Congress in handling Agent Orange - dioxin at Bien Hoa airport and programs to support Agent Orange victims, clear bombs and mines, and support people with disabilities in Vietnam.

Congressman Brian Mast affirmed that the United States considers Vietnam one of its key partners in Southeast Asia and supports the substantive implementation of bilateral relations; the Vietnam-US relationship is a model of healing and reconciliation.

Congressman Brian Mast emphasized that as Chairman of the US House Foreign Affairs Committee, he will actively promote parliamentary exchanges, enhance dialogue between lawmakers of the two countries, as well as promote initiatives to enhance economic and trade cooperation, especially in areas of mutual benefit.

Congressman Brian Mast also pledged to support and urge the US Congress to continue its commitment to ensuring appropriate resources for humanitarian projects and overcoming the consequences of war in Vietnam.

For his part, Congressman Young Kim appreciated the bridging role of the Vietnamese-American community and welcomed the two countries' continued promotion of cooperation in all fields, especially economics - trade, education - training, and people-to-people exchange...

On this occasion, the President suggested that the two sides continue to increase contacts and exchanges of delegations at all levels, promote trade and investment cooperation, considering this one of the important pillars, and dialogue together to handle remaining differences.

Appreciating Delaware's strengths in the fields of biotechnology, high-tech agriculture, renewable energy, and pharmaceuticals, President Luong Cuong asked Senator Chris Coons to promote cooperation between the two countries as well as between Delaware and Vietnamese localities in these fields.

For his part, Senator Chris Coons affirmed that Vietnam is one of the leading partners of the United States in the region; congratulated Vietnam on its remarkable achievements in socio-economic development in recent times and expressed his joy with the substantive progress in implementing the Vietnam-US Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, including increased exchanges and contacts between the two countries' legislative bodies.

Senator Chris Coons emphasized that the US Senate strongly supports promoting enhanced cooperation in all channels and fields, especially in economics and trade, resolving war consequences, education and training; affirming that in his position, he will continue to promote the implementation of the Vietnam - US Comprehensive Strategic Partnership; promote the tradition left by previous generations of senators, especially in implementing the commitment to support cooperation in overcoming war consequences.

Senator Chris Coons also appreciated the role of Fulbright University Vietnam in promoting training cooperation between the two countries, thereby contributing to supporting Vietnam in making a breakthrough in training high-quality human resources.

During the meetings, the two sides also discussed regional and international issues of mutual concern. President Luong Cuong stressed the importance of the United States continuing to value ASEAN's central role and enhancing cooperation on global issues such as climate change, maritime security, sustainable development, etc.

President Luong Cuong suggested that the United States continue to strengthen cooperation with ASEAN, promote ASEAN's central role, and coordinate at multilateral forums to contribute to peace, stability, cooperation, and development in the region.

The parliamentarians also stressed the importance of maintaining dialogue and cooperation with ASEAN to ensure peace, stability and sustainable development in the region.
