One of the special structures that cannot be missed when mentioning Hanoi is the One Pillar Pagoda. This ancient pagoda was built with impressive architecture and is a tourist attraction for many tourists when they have the opportunity to visit the capital Hanoi.
One Pillar Pagoda is also known as Mat Pagoda, Dien Huu Pagoda or Lien Hoa Dai. This is a pagoda with unique architecture built during the reign of King Ly Thai Tong in 1049.
Legend has it that King Ly Thai Tong dreamed of Bodhisattva Avalokitesvara meditating on a shining lotus throne, and she led the king up onto the lotus throne. Upon waking up, the king immediately ordered the construction of the One Pillar Pagoda, exactly as he had seen in his dream.
The pagoda was built with a unique pillar structure. The architectural shape looks like a lotus rising in the middle of Linh Chieu Lake. It is a creative combination of many different disciplines from sculpture, carving, painting. The water surface is also a beauty, a mirror that brightens up the pagoda above.
The One Pillar Pagoda was built in a square shape. Each side of the pagoda is 3m. Below is a 4m high stone pillar, 1.2m in diameter, consisting of 2 blocks attached together. On the body of the pillar are 8 wide-spread wooden petals that look like a blooming lotus flower. Above the roof of the pagoda is a fiery moon, on both sides are dragon heads facing the moon. The pagoda has 4 roofs with 4 curved eaves and embossed dragon heads.
To place the offering on the temple floor, visitors must climb 13 steps. Inside the temple is a statue of Guanyin sitting on a lotus platform gilded with gold. Over many dynasties, witnessing the changes of history, the temple has been restored and repaired many times. Up to today, the architecture of the temple has also changed compared to the original. The One Pillar Pagoda was recognized by the Asian Record Organization as the Temple with the most unique architecture in 2012.
