Old age - bright example
At the age of over 70, Mr. Tran Van Huyen, a member of the Elderly Association of Dam Doi commune, is still attached to the work of the grassroots mediation team. For him, the greatest joy is to contribute to uniting the community, helping people eliminate petty conflicts and maintain the village and neighborhood relationship .
He shared: “I have life experience and knowledge, so I try to use my experience to help people resolve family conflicts, small disputes, and create harmony in the community. In addition, I also encourage members to join the health club , traditional music club, and at the same time advise my children and grandchildren to actively study and obey the law.”
A meeting of the elderly female group of Tan Loc commune to share economic experiences and exchange with each other.
Many elderly people have boldly started their own businesses at the age of seventy, opening shrimp farming models, growing clean vegetables, teaching handicrafts, etc. to increase family income and create more jobs for local workers.
A typical example is Mr. Doan Quang Lieu (75 years old), a member of the Elderly Association of An Xuyen Ward. Although his family is not poor and his children and grandchildren advise him to rest, he still works hard in the garden every day, taking care of each apricot tree and tending the fish pond. This work not only helps the family economy to be more stable but also supports many disadvantaged households in the commune to have the conditions to rise up.
Mr. Lieu confided: “First of all, I have to set an example for my children and grandchildren in work and production. When my family’s economy is stable, I will have the opportunity to participate in propaganda work, mobilizing people to build new rural areas together, and encouraging each other to escape poverty.”
The elderly also actively participate in environmental sanitation activities every Sunday.
In the new rural commune of Tan Loc, the Association of the Elderly has actively contributed to changing the appearance of the homeland. Mr. Nguyen Van Gio, Chairman of the Association of the Elderly, proudly said: “Every Sunday, members join local forces to mobilize people to clean up, collect trash, and trim hedges. The work is small but practical, contributing to making the appearance of the countryside brighter - greener - cleaner - more beautiful”.
The Elderly Association of Tan Loc commune also mobilized people to take turns patrolling and watching over property, thanks to which theft has significantly decreased, maintaining security and order.
According to the Provincial Elderly Association, many elderly people still play a key role in the movements: "All people unite to build a cultural life", "Exemplary grandparents and parents - filial children and grandchildren"; actively participating in promoting education and talent. The exemplary role, prestige and sense of responsibility of the elderly have become a great source of encouragement, contributing to strengthening the great national unity bloc.
Elderly care
Mr. Nguyen Manh Dung, Deputy Head of the Provincial Elderly Association, said: “The whole province has tens of thousands of elderly people, many of whom participate in social work, playing a core role in building cultural life, promoting education, promoting talents, and protecting security and order at the grassroots level. Exemplary elderly people, 'older age - higher ambition', have spread the spirit of responsibility, and are a valuable spiritual support for families and the community.”
Seniors struggle to embrace digital technology.
Over the past years, the Provincial Elderly Association Representative Board has directed all levels of the association to closely coordinate with the government, mobilizing members to actively participate in environmental protection, contributing to the completion of environmental criteria in building new rural areas and civilized urban areas.
In the period of 2022 - 2026, the emulation movement "Old age - bright example" continues to be promoted, aiming to promote the role of the elderly in managing and rationally using natural resources, protecting the environment, adapting to climate change, and building a sustainable homeland.
Ms. Dang Thi Lan, a member of the Elderly Association of Tan Loc commune, who was awarded a Certificate of Merit by the Central Elderly Association, expressed: “'Devoting one's old age to building society' is not only an action but also a humane message: No matter what age, each person can contribute in their own way. For the elderly, that contribution is even more valuable, because it contains passion, experience and love for the homeland and country that has been distilled throughout life."
Mrs. Dang Thi Lan's family is a typical example of elderly people who work actively and participate in social activities.
Towards the International Day of the Elderly on October 1 and the Action Month for the Elderly in Vietnam in 2025, Party committees, authorities, organizations, and the business community have paid attention to the material and spiritual lives of the elderly. Thousands of gifts and savings books were given to the needy; many health check-up programs, nutrition consultations, and screening for geriatric diseases were organized at medical facilities.
In particular, localities also organize cultural and artistic activities, physical exercises, and amateur music exchanges, creating a joyful and warm space for the elderly to meet, share experiences, and increase their faith in life. This is also an opportunity for the younger generation to learn and follow the example of the elderly in preserving traditions, building families and homelands.
Mr. Nguyen Manh Dung, Deputy Head of the Provincial Elderly Association, emphasized : “The provincial leaders always care for and create conditions to promote the role of the elderly. This is both a traditional morality and contributes to the stability and development of society. Through activities on the occasion of the International Day of the Elderly, all levels and sectors have expressed deep gratitude to the previous generation - those who have devoted their whole lives to their homeland and country.”
