On October 2, the Ho Chi Minh City Party Committee held a ceremony to announce the book series "History of Saigon - Ho Chi Minh City".
The book series, co-chaired by Prof. Dr. Vo Van Sen and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Phan Xuan Bien, chaired by the Ho Chi Minh City Historical Science Association, was implemented since 2014 and accepted at the City level in 2020 with excellent results.
The book series “History of Saigon - Ho Chi Minh City” is a work that brings together profound scientific, ideological - theoretical and practical values; comprehensively and systematically reflecting the history of the birth, construction and development of Ho Chi Minh City.
After the review, editing and completion process, in July 2025, the work was officially published in 1,000 sets, including 6 volumes (5 comprehensive volumes and 1 abridged volume).
- Volume I: The land of Saigon - Ho Chi Minh City from its origin to the 16th century , recreates the formation process from the beginning, with traces of ancient residents and prehistoric cultures.
- Volume II: Saigon - Gia Dinh from the early 17th century to the mid-19th century , reflects the exploration, establishment of administrative foundation, shaping of urban - economic center, laying the foundation for a prosperous land.
- Volume III: Saigon - Cho Lon - Gia Dinh from 1859 to 1945 , records the journey of both prosperous economic and cultural development and becoming the center of the national struggle movement, the origin of the proletarian revolutionary path.
- Episode IV: Saigon - Gia Dinh from 1945 to 1975 , recreates 30 years of revolutionary struggle, where the city played the central role of both sides, and was also the decisive focus in the great victory of Spring 1975.
- Volume V: Ho Chi Minh City from 1975 to 2015 , reflects the strong transformation of a special urban area, leading in innovation and international integration, becoming the largest economic and cultural center of the country.
- Volume VI: Summary, as a summary of the entire historical process from prehistoric times to 2015 of Saigon - Ho Chi Minh City , is the journey of many cultures, many layers of people, many successive generations, building and developing this land.
According to Associate Professor Dr. Vo Van Sen, Chairman of the Ho Chi Minh City Historical Science Association, project manager, the implementation team used modern approaches and rich materials, reflecting the latest results and achievements of Vietnamese historical science.
The book is presented in a general historical style with a political style combining historical description, analysis and explanation, with illustrative appendices. The work uses sources of documents, books, and papers in the national archives of the Party and State, archives, libraries, archaeological documents, museums, and references to memoirs and local history of the City. With a volume of more than 4,500 pages, including 27 historical chapters and 5 appendices, the work addresses many important scientific contents.
"The journey from prehistoric times to the beginning of the Christian era and to the present day of the history of Saigon - Ho Chi Minh City is the journey of dozens of cultures, thousands of layers of people, hundreds of successive generations, building and developing the land of the Dong Nai River basin, Saigon River, gradually becoming village land, Ho land, Tran citadel, Dinh citadel, to become an urban area, a modern civilization. That process, more than 300 years (1698-2015) is an extremely important period, deciding everything present in Ho Chi Minh City now and in the future", Associate Professor, Dr. Vo Van Sen said.
Speaking at the ceremony, comrade Duong Anh Duc, member of the Standing Committee of the City Party Committee, Head of the Propaganda and Mass Mobilization Committee of the Ho Chi Minh City Party Committee, said that with its particularly important position, the land of Saigon - Gia Dinh - Ho Chi Minh City has become the research subject of many domestic and foreign scientists with many published works and articles, but mainly in the modern historical period, referring to a number of specific fields, not clearly showing the overall and overall history of this land.
Accordingly, the summary and evaluation of the entire journey from prehistoric to early historical times and the history of formation and development of Ho Chi Minh City up to now needs to be raised and resolved properly, with the right scale, commensurate with the depth of the City's development history.
"The Standing Committee of the City Party Committee hopes that the book series will be valuable documents for studying, learning and researching about Ho Chi Minh City, contributing to fostering revolutionary traditions, cultivating noble ideals, and consolidating firm belief in the revolutionary cause and the path to socialism that the Party, Uncle Ho and our people have chosen," Comrade Duong Anh Duc expected.
On this occasion, the Standing Committee of the Ho Chi Minh City Party Committee awarded Certificates of Merit to 4 collectives and 13 individuals with outstanding achievements in organizing and compiling the book series "History of Saigon - Ho Chi Minh City".
