According to the General Statistics Office ( Ministry of Finance ), compared to the previous month, the consumer price index (CPI) in August increased by 0.05%. Compared to December 2024, the CPI in August increased by 2.18% and compared to the same period last year, it increased by 3.24%.
In August, there were 8 groups of goods and services with increasing price indexes; 3 groups of goods and services with decreasing price indexes.
Accordingly, the housing, electricity, water, fuel and construction materials group increased by 0.21%. Of which, house rental prices increased by 0.28% due to increased demand for houses in some localities in preparation for the new school year, when students and pupils return to big cities to study.
Household electricity prices increased by 1.01% due to hot weather increasing electricity demand; prices of housing maintenance materials increased by 0.49% due to high prices of bricks, sand, and stones due to scarce supply, increased production and transportation costs while construction demand is high.
Next is the education group, with an increase of 0.21% due to some universities, private high schools and private kindergartens in some localities increasing tuition fees for the 2025-2026 school year. Along with that, the price of paper products increased by 0.9%; pens of all kinds increased by 0.71%; stationery and other school supplies increased by 0.52%.
The garment, hat and footwear group increased by 0.17% due to increased shopping demand in preparation for the new school year. Of which, prices of various fabrics increased by 0.28%; garment services increased by 0.27%; footwear increased by 0.18%; ready-made clothes and footwear services both increased by 0.16%; hats increased by 0.07%.
The beverage and tobacco group increased by 0.17% due to increased consumer demand during the summer and increased production costs, of which the price of carbonated soft drinks increased by 0.41%; mineral water increased by 0.3%; alcohol of all kinds increased by 0.2%; bottled, canned, and boxed energy drinks increased by 0.17%; beer of all kinds increased by 0.12%; cigarettes increased by 0.11%...

On the contrary, the CPI's increase was held back by the decline of three commodity groups.
The transportation group decreased by 0.11%, mainly due to adjustments in domestic gasoline prices (gasoline decreased by 0.2%; diesel decreased by 2.06%).
The food and catering services group also decreased slightly by 0.06%, but there was a contrast within: food prices decreased by 0.18% due to the cooling of pork prices, while out-of-home catering services increased by 0.2%, due to summer tourism demand.
Along with that, the post and telecommunications group continued to decrease by 0.04% due to the price reduction of technology devices such as smartphones and tablets.
Core inflation in August increased by 0.19% over the previous month and by 3.25% over the same period last year.
On average, core inflation in the first 8 months increased by 3.19% compared to the same period last year, lower than the 3.25% increase of the average CPI, mainly due to the prices of food, foodstuffs, electricity, medical services, and education services which are factors affecting the increase in CPI but are in the group of goods excluded from the list of core inflation calculations.
