Vu Ngoc Duy came to the medical profession from his admiration for his mother in a white blouse, always striving to find light for patients. Duy's mother is an ophthalmologist in Vinh Phuc . Having a talent for Math, Duy passed the entrance exam to the specialized Math class at Vinh Phuc High School for the Gifted, old Vinh Phuc province (now Phu Tho province). For three years of high school, Duy won the first prize in the provincial Math competition, in 11th grade he won the third prize in the national Math competition, in 12th grade he won the second prize in the national Math competition, and entered the qualifying round to select the team to compete in the International Math Olympiad.
With his achievements in Mathematics, many other candidates will choose to study information technology at other schools, but Duy wants to stick with the medical field like students who are good at Biology and Chemistry (two traditional subjects of medical schools). Duy is one of the students who was directly admitted to the medical doctor program at Hanoi Medical University in 2019.
Duy said that in the first year, when he first entered the school, Duy was "shocked" when he was weak in Biology and Chemistry and his final score was only 6-7 points. The first year's results were "not as dreamy" as the young man who had just been crowned national excellent student in Mathematics. But very quickly, from the second year, Duy regained his form. As a result, Duy graduated with an excellent degree (this year, the Faculty of Medicine of Hanoi Medical University did not have any excellent graduates, the rate of excellent graduates was over 7%).
After six years of studying, with theoretical lessons in the classroom and clinical sessions at the hospital, Duy always cherishes and feels that his choice was not wrong. “If I had chosen to study information technology or another field, who knows, I might not have achieved the results I have today,” Duy said.

It was also from the lessons, especially the nights walking with Dr. Tran Danh Cuong, former Director of the Central Obstetrics Hospital, that inspired Duy to pursue the profession of obstetrician. “Up to 90% of people think that mothers are safe when entering the delivery room. But the truth is not like that. Giving birth is a journey that is both sacred but also full of hardship, pain and danger. Only when witnessing and participating directly in births can one know how dangerous the mother is,” Duy said.
Gradually, moments like that permeated through the years of medical school, so when he found out that he was the top scorer in the residency exam, Duy decided to choose obstetrics, even though he had previously considered another option, which was oncology (obstetrics residency is always the hottest major among medical majors - pv).
Duy feels proud to be with his mother and brother (nurse) on the path of becoming a doctor to save people.
