Obstetrics and gynecology is the specialty that "burns" its quota the earliest.

This year, the residency training program of Hanoi Medical University enrolls 426 students for 38 majors. This year’s residency exam is the largest in scale with nearly 1,000 candidates participating.

Each medical, traditional medicine, and dentistry student can only take the residency exam once in their life, right in the year they graduate from university. After knowing their scores, the candidates with the highest scores will be the first to choose their major, in turn until the quota is full. Candidates with lower scores will no longer have the opportunity to choose their major when the quota is full.

As a result, the obstetrics and gynecology major only accepted 13 people, but by the time the candidate with the 33rd highest score turned around, the quota for this major had been filled. Obstetrics and gynecology is the major that has run out of quota the earliest among the residency training programs of Hanoi Medical University this year.

Among the top 20 candidates in this year’s residency exam at Hanoi Medical University, 7 chose obstetrics and gynecology. The top scorer of this year’s exam also chose this major.

Last year, the Hanoi Medical University's residency training exam also showed that obstetrics and gynecology was the most attractive major among the school's 38 majors for residency training.

Top benchmark scores for residency training in many schools

Not only Hanoi Medical University, obstetrics and gynecology also leads the major with the highest admission scores for residency training of many other medical schools in recent years.

For example, among the 13 training majors for resident physicians at the University of Medicine and Pharmacy (Hanoi National University) in 2024, obstetrics and gynecology residents lead the benchmark score along with pediatric residents at 23.5 points.

The standard score for resident physicians in 2024 at the University of Medicine and Pharmacy ( Hue University) is similar. Among the 15 specialties, obstetrics and gynecology is also at the top with 23.3 points (only after dermatology).

Although not leading, obstetrics and gynecology is also in the top 4 specialties for training resident physicians with the highest entrance scores in the recent post-graduate admissions of Can Tho University of Medicine and Pharmacy. Accordingly, candidates need to meet the admission requirements including the main subject must be 7.0 points or higher and the remaining 4 subjects must each have 5.0 points or higher. When considering admission, based on the total score of 4 subjects (excluding foreign language), ranked from high to low, taking up to the quota of each major/specialty.

Reasons for the trend of choosing obstetrics and gynecology residents

Sharing the reasons for the trend of choosing obstetrics and gynecology residents, opinions stated important reasons.

Dr. Trung Nhu, a lecturer in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of Medicine and Pharmacy in Ho Chi Minh City, shared the reason why he chose to study for a residency in obstetrics and gynecology. "The important reason is probably the working environment after graduation. In hospitals, the obstetrics department can be said to be the place that many doctors love to work. Because there is no place like here where there are always smiles, happy smiles of patients and their families when welcoming new members to the family...", Dr. Trung Nhu shared.

According to Dr. Trung Nhu, another reason comes from the love of the learning environment at the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, University of Medicine and Pharmacy, Ho Chi Minh City. Students and pupils here experience the process of learning about obstetrics and gynecology according to a modern program, on real clinical cases. Lecturers always listen, students have the right to "refute" the teacher's opinion if they can provide specific medical evidence. It is this "open" factor that obstetrics and gynecology is always in the top 1 or 2 among the specialties training resident physicians.

Another doctor said that obstetrics and gynecology is the most popular major in training residents, mainly due to job opportunities and high income. This doctor said: "Currently, the demand for obstetrics and gynecology is increasing, promising many job opportunities for residents after graduation. In addition, this is a major that can easily earn higher income than other majors. Therefore, it is understandable that many people choose obstetrics and gynecology."

According to this doctor, the reason also comes from the ability to develop expertise when currently the obstetrics and gynecology field in Vietnam is very developed, even some fields have international prestige. Therefore, choosing the obstetrics and gynecology field helps residents have the ability to develop expertise and high techniques sooner and more conveniently.

The leaders of Ho Chi Minh City University of Medicine and Pharmacy also believe that there are many factors that attract people to study obstetrics and gynecology residency, such as: interests, social needs, learning opportunities and future career development.
