The chase for the title of "world's richest" between Larry Ellison and Elon Musk

(Dan Tri) - Larry Ellison's fortune increased sharply when the stock price of the company he owns increased, helping him surpass Elon Musk to become the richest person in the world. However, this "changing of the throne" process did not last long.

Elon Musk has unexpectedly lost the title of “ world’s richest person” to the co-founder of software company Oracle when Larry Ellison’s assets skyrocketed by another 89 billion USD, to 383.2 billion USD.

Larry Ellison's fortune soared after Oracle's financial report was released, showing the company achieved extremely impressive profits, pushing the company's stock price up by 43%, the highest increase within a day since Oracle officially went public in 1992.

Ellison, co-founder and largest shareholder at Oracle, has benefited from the company's soaring stock price.

According to Bloomberg's billionaire rankings, Larry Ellison's fortune surpassed Elon Musk to become the richest person in the world on Wednesday evening (US time).

However, Ellison only held the number one spot for a short time before Elon Musk quickly took it back after a few hours.

According to Bloomberg, Elon Musk's current assets are estimated at 384 billion USD, about 1 billion USD higher than Larry Ellison. This gap is not large and Ellison will likely soon surpass Musk to become the richest person in the world, in the context of Oracle's stock price continuing to increase strongly.

In the context of the global explosion of artificial intelligence (AI), Oracle has emerged as a key infrastructure provider to serve the huge computing needs of AI companies. Last July, the corporation announced an agreement to provide OpenAI – the owner of ChatGPT – with 4.5 GigaWatts of electricity to operate the server system.

Oracle recently announced four multi-billion dollar deals and is expected to continue closing more major deals in the coming months. The impressive business results have pushed the company's stock price up 97% in 2025 alone, bringing its market capitalization to $922 billion and helping Oracle enter the top 10 largest corporations in the world.

In contrast to Oracle's rise, Tesla shares have fallen 14% since the beginning of the year, dragging down Elon Musk's fortune. Musk became the richest person in the world in 2021 thanks to his Tesla stake and investment in SpaceX. Over the years, he has lost this title three times in a short time, to Bernard Arnault (LVMH), Jeff Bezos (Amazon) and now Larry Ellison (Oracle).

Despite the difficulties, Musk’s fortune continues to increase, enough to maintain his leading position. The race for the title of “richest person on the planet” between Musk and Ellison has therefore become more intense than ever, when the gap in assets is not large.

As Oracle continues to demonstrate its strength in the technology market, Ellison's ability to rise to the top of the world in the near future is not surprising.

Larry Ellison's journey to becoming one of the richest people in the world began in 1977, when he dropped out of college to found the software company Oracle.

Despite his 81 years, Ellison is still very healthy and a true “playboy”, with many hobbies of the super-rich. He is also a close friend of President Donald Trump, often appearing at the White House and once serving on President Trump’s advisory board.

Oracle was once a potential candidate to acquire ownership of the social network TikTok in the US, however, this deal has not yet been completed.
