Rescued man with saw blade cut deep into forearm

Immediately after the accident, Mr. B. was bleeding uncontrollably, his skin was pale, he was in pain and could not move his arm. His family quickly took him to Xuyen A Long An General Hospital for emergency treatment.

Upon receiving the patient, the doctors quickly examined and assessed the extent of the injury. Initial visual examination revealed a long and deep wound, cutting through multiple layers of muscle in the forearm. Furthermore, the patient was bleeding continuously and could not be stopped even with a bandage. Immediately, the doctor performed temporary hemostasis in preparation for emergency surgery to suture all the severed tendons and blood vessels.

On October 2, specialist doctor Nguyen Tien Loc, treating doctor of the Orthopedic Trauma Department, Xuyen A Long An General Hospital, said that the X-ray results showed that the patient not only suffered muscle damage but also a broken piece of bone in the forearm (radius). This proves that the sawing injury severed almost all the components of the front of the forearm.

Faced with that situation, doctors decided to perform surgery to reconnect damaged blood vessels and nerves as well as torn tendons - the muscles responsible for movement in the fingers and wrist.

During the surgery, the doctor determined that the artery was completely severed, but due to the saw, a part of the artery was severely bruised. After removing the bruised part, the two severed ends of the artery could still be reconnected without the need for a blood vessel graft.

The surgery was successful and the patient was transferred to the Orthopedic Department for monitoring. Doctors carefully controlled blood circulation through the connected blood vessels and monitored for signs of infection at the surgical site. In addition, the patient was also given intravenous fluids and supportive medications, including antibiotics and anticoagulants, to prevent post-operative complications.

After a week, under the dedicated care of the team of doctors and nurses, the wound's general condition recovered well and the patient was discharged from the hospital to return home with his family.

Even if the nerves are successfully reconnected, their function may not be fully restored, leading to reduced or lost sensation in the forearm and hand, or partial loss of finger mobility. Other complications may include the formation of blood clots in the connecting vessels, or scar tissue compressing the nerves.

Every year, the hospital receives many cases of work-related and domestic accidents with serious injuries and severe consequences. When an accident occurs, not only the worker suffers the consequences, but also their family and relatives are affected because they are often the main breadwinners and laborers in the family.

To reduce the risk of work accidents and household accidents, doctors recommend:
