Saving a female patient with a ruptured liver due to a traffic accident

On October 17, news from Thanh Vu Medic Bac Lieu General Hospital said that the hospital had just received and saved the life of female patient CTN (58 years old, living in Ward 3, Bac Lieu City) who was admitted to the hospital 2 days after falling off a motorbike, with her injury condition becoming more serious.

Through examination and paraclinical tests, the doctor diagnosed the patient with a large hematoma in segments 6 and 7 of the right liver parenchyma, grade 3 intracapsular liver rupture.

The patient was also diagnosed with many underlying diseases such as: fatty liver, diabetes, vestibular disorders, atherosclerosis, mixed hyperlipidemia. In addition, the patient also had bilateral secondary knee osteoarthritis, spinal degeneration, ischemic cardiomyopathy, hypertension, gastroesophageal reflux and esophagitis.

The patient was given emergency care, intensive medical treatment, and close monitoring of pulse, blood pressure, and abdominal condition. After consultation, the doctors agreed to use digital subtraction angiography (DSA), with minimal invasion, to stop the bleeding from the patient's liver rupture. After the successful procedure, the patient was awake, with stable vital signs, mild pain in the right hypochondrium, and a femoral artery bandage was still in place.

According to doctors, in the past, liver rupture cases could usually be treated with open surgery. But 30% of them had to be treated thoroughly by liver resection. In addition, the patient's post-operative problems would become severe, because this was a major surgery. For elderly patients with many underlying diseases, the effects would be even more severe.

Doctor Thach Dien, who directly intervened for the CTN patient, advised: People who are injured after a traffic accident, when they feel pain, or even no pain, need to go to the hospital to perform the necessary tests as soon as possible, in order to promptly detect abnormalities in the body. From there, they can be diagnosed and treated early, minimizing the dangerous complications that may occur.
