Bustling Tet flowers
No more rainy days, the weather is favorable so the flower and ornamental plant market these days has started to be bustling.
Mr. Le Ngoc Tam (Tan Thai village, Tam Thang commune, Tam Ky) said that 80% of the flowers and ornamental plants in the garden have been ordered by traders, so he is assured of the output. Mr. Tam focuses on taking care of the rest to sell "little by little" from now until Tet Giap Thin 2024. "This year's Tet flower crop has achieved both output and value, so there will be a good source of income" - Mr. Tam said excitedly.
All three members of Mr. Tam's family were very agile. They had just seen Mr. Tam trimming the leaves of the big chrysanthemums, and in just a moment, they were already taking care of the hanging flower pots. Mr. Tam's older brother was also quick to arrange the flower pots in neat rows...
Mr. Tam's garden currently has 1,500 large and crystal chrysanthemum pots; 2,500 hanging flower pots, mostly primroses and begonias; 1,500 raspberry and poinsettia pots.
Prices of input materials such as fertilizers, pesticides, pots, etc. for this year's flower and ornamental plant crop are stable. Thanks to the quality and variety of varieties, flower and ornamental plant growers expect a smooth output. Meanwhile, many forecast that the flower and ornamental plant market this year will be stable, with little price fluctuation. Familiar and easy-to-sell flowers bring in a good income for gardeners.
“I use a drip irrigation system which is very convenient and saves water. This year the flowers grow and develop as planned. Chrysanthemums cost 190,000 VND/pot, hanging flowers sell for 50,000 VND/pot, raspberries cost 150,000 VND/pot. The flowers have a good harvest and good prices, so this Tet will be more joyful and joyful than every year,” said Mr. Tam.
In gardens in Duy Xuyen, Thang Binh, and Nui Thanh, farmers intercrop apricot, peony, gerbera, lily, trumpet lily, potted chrysanthemum, sunflower, marigold, etc. Mr. Ly Hoa (Phuoc Am village, Binh Trieu commune, Thang Binh) said, planting many types of flowers to avoid massive damage to plants and loss of crops. Moreover, a variety of flowers is easy to sell.
“We grow a variety of Tet flowers to serve the market well, everyone can buy whatever they like. Luckily, this year all the flowers bloomed in time for Tet, traders ordered a lot so there is no need to worry about output. Growing Tet flowers brings more profit than other crops. Next year I plan to expand the area of Tet flower growing,” Mr. Hoa said.
Specializing in growing flowers and ornamental plants for Tet
In Hoi An city, separate flower and ornamental plant growing areas have been formed. Kumquat trees are mainly grown in Tan An ward, Thanh Ha and Cam Ha commune. Hanging flowers are popular in Cam Chau ward, Cam Thanh commune. Chrysanthemums are grown in Cam Chau ward.
Mr. Nguyen Tan Thanh in Son Pho block (Cam Chau ward, Hoi An) has been growing hanging flowers for 3 years now. In a 1,000m2 canvas-covered garden, Mr. Thanh hangs layers of baskets of snowball, snapdragon, zinnia, meteorite, geranium, and black eye. Mr. Thanh said hanging flowers are no longer new but have "covered" many gardens in Hoi An. People who understand the techniques of each type of flower and spend a lot of time taking care of it are likely to succeed.
Hoi An hanging flowers do not worry about output because the price is not high, suitable for street space, especially restaurants, guild halls, hotels, and coffee shops need hanging flowers to serve customers' enjoyment.
“Hanging flowers are very eye-catching, can be used for many days but cost only a few tens of thousands of dong per basket. The more unique the flower, the more attractive it is. Growing and investing in hanging flowers brings a good income, so I stick with it for a long time,” said Mr. Thanh.
It's more than a month until Lunar New Year, but these days, garden owners in Cam Ha commune, Thanh Ha ward have sold almost all of their kumquat trees.
Throughout the kumquat gardens in Dong Na and Trang Suoi villages, traders from Quang Ngai, Binh Dinh, Quang Tri, and Da Nang have come to deposit money to buy kumquats for Tet. The kumquats have now turned yellow, waiting to ripen and be sold to people for Tet.
“Cam Ha kumquat is a brand so we buy and sell it for Tet. Kumquats here never fall during Tet so customers love them. Kumquat branches and shapes in Hoi An are also very eye-catching. Prices are quickly negotiated, type A pots cost 5 million VND, small kumquat pots cost more than 1 million VND” - said Mr. Tran Hoa, a trader selling kumquats in Da Nang city.
Mr. Mai Kim Phuong - Chairman of Cam Ha Commune People's Committee said that the local government always creates favorable conditions to help farmers grow kumquats for Tet, develop production, and affirm their brand in the market.
Every year, the People's Committee of Cam Ha commune organizes a kumquat bonsai festival to promote and expand the consumption of products to the people. This is also an opportunity for people to exchange experiences in planting and caring for kumquat bonsai to develop the local traditional craft.
For many years, Hoi An City has focused on planning to develop the flower and ornamental plant growing industry in the direction of commodities, to gain great economic value per unit of cultivated area.
Mr. Nguyen The Hung - Vice Chairman of Hoi An City People's Committee shared that the city government always encourages and supports farmers to grow flowers and ornamental plants in an ecological and green way to protect the environment and at the same time protect the long-term and sustainable production of the farmers themselves.
