Malignant moles are often asymmetrical in appearance. Benign moles have smooth, rounded borders, but atypical moles have irregular, tortuous, map-like borders. Instead of being brown or black, malignant moles are dark in some areas, light in others, black, brown, red, blue, or pigmented.

Common moles are less than 6mm in size, but moles larger than 6mm are considered to have risk factors.

With moles that are at risk of malignancy, the time to change from small to large is very short. It is possible that in just a few months, the mole has increased several times. In addition, there are some other characteristics such as: ulceration, bleeding, rough surface, itching or pain.
