2025 university benchmark scores generally decrease sharply, STEM and pedagogy majors increase

The 2025 university benchmark scores generally decreased sharply compared to 2024, but there was strong differentiation between industries and schools.

This morning, September 18, at VinUni University, the Ministry of Education and Training held the 2025 Higher Education Conference. According to the report of the Department of Higher Education, the average university benchmark score in 2025 is 3 points lower than last year. However, the benchmark scores are strongly differentiated between schools and majors.

Mr. Nguyen Tien Thao, Director of the Department of Higher Education, said that the results of implementing the university enrollment target for the 2024-2025 school year increased compared to the 2023-2024 school year. The average benchmark score of all admission methods for all majors and schools in 2025 is 19.11 (in 2024 it was 22.05).

Thus, the average benchmark score in 2025 is about 3 points lower than in 2024. According to the Ministry of Education and Training, this decrease is consistent with the sharp decrease in high school graduation exam scores in 2024 in the three subjects of math, biology and English.

On the other hand, the benchmark scores of different majors and schools are highly differentiated. Admission results for pedagogical majors and STEM majors have improved significantly. Pedagogical majors and key engineering and strategic technology majors strongly attract excellent candidates, especially at top universities.

In 74 majors with a standard score based on high school graduation exam scores of 28/30 or higher, there are 50 pedagogical majors and 17 key technical majors and strategic technologies (computer science , artificial intelligence, semiconductor microchips, control and automation, etc.).

However, the results of the first round of university admissions in 2025 also show that the leading group in terms of recruitment quota size of the vocational groups is still the business - management group (25%). The second largest group is computer and IT, only reaching nearly half the scale (12%) of the business - management group. Specifically as shown in the diagram below:
