According to Thanet Tantipiriyakit, president of the Phuket Tourism Association, the resort island has now become a destination for quality tourists, with total tourist spending rising above the level recorded in 2019, the time before the Covid-19 pandemic, despite a slight decrease in the total number of visitors.
According to Thailand's Tourism Ministry, Phuket recorded revenue from visitors to the island of 246 billion baht (7.5 billion USD) in the first half of this year, while tourist spending is expected to reach 50 billion baht (1.5 billion USD) per month during the two peak months at the end of the year.
Thanet said Phuket will also welcome more direct flights in the final quarter of this year, including flights from destinations in Kazakhstan, India, Cambodia and Saudi Arabia. Total tourist arrivals to Phuket this year will reach 14 million, the same as in 2019, compared to 11 million in 2023.
Tourists from China remain the largest group of visitors to Phuket, followed by those from Russia and India. Meanwhile, the European and Australian markets have seen growth, but the increase in tourist numbers has been negligible.
The resort island expects international events in Phuket next year to attract more tourists, notably the international contemporary art festival Biennale Phuket 2025, which will run from November 2025 to April 2026.
