Investigation into the cause of the Su-22 aircraft incident in Yen Bai

Information from the Ministry of National Defense said that at 2:29 p.m. on April 23, Regiment 921, Air Division 371 of the Air Defense - Air Force organized a training flight, Su-22M4 aircraft number 5858, piloted by Lieutenant Colonel Phan Thanh Hai.

When landing, the pilot reported that the landing gear was not available and asked permission to descend to release the emergency gear. After doing so, the emergency gear was released and the plane landed and ran for takeoff. The pilot released the parachute as prescribed, but due to the high speed, the parachute broke and the plane went beyond the runway's final stopping area (photo). Pilot Phan Thanh Hai parachuted safely, the plane was slightly damaged.

Immediately after receiving the information, the competent authorities of the Ministry of National Defense and the Air Defense - Air Force Command directed the Accident Investigation Council to clarify and verify the cause.
