Cultural flow, seen from the people of Quang Nam

Quang Nam was named and claimed sovereignty by King Le Thanh Tong in 1471, spanning a large area, the strip of land from the south of Hai Van Pass to Da Bia Mountain, including many coastal provinces in the Central region. Therefore, there is no need to argue much about the culture of Quang land, which always includes Da Nang culture.

The indivisible flow of culture

Culture is a lasting accumulation of essence, passed down from generation to generation.

Previously, Da Nang was not an administrative place name, but only the name of a seaport, which was always considered a military defense location during feudal times.

On May 24, 1889, the French established Da Nang city under Quang Nam province. Later, after many separations and mergers, on January 1, 1997, Da Nang was separated from Quang Nam - Da Nang province, becoming a centrally-governed city - an economic center of the Central and Central Highlands regions.

Throughout the history of several hundred years, Da Nang culture is still Quang culture. Quang Nam and Da Nang culture are always one.

One can separate administrative places, economic and political centers, but one cannot separate culture.

Because culture is a continuous flow, a silent and continuously moving source with eternal meaning and increasingly enriched, in a developing direction, in a biosphere with core meaning, always inheriting, adapting, integrating, intermingling and increasingly filling up, exponentially.

Facing new opportunities, Da Nang continues to be the political and economic center of this entire land, the economic locomotive for the Central region and the Central Highlands.

Da Nang will also become a cultural center with a strong Quang culture, if it knows how to evoke and awaken the long-standing cultural nuances passed down from our ancestors, which have created traditions in the history of the country.

That requires the vision of those who are entrusted with important responsibilities by history and the people, and the attitude, cooperation, and contribution of all the people, including intellectuals and culturalists.

A cultural land never lacks cultural people, because after all, culture always comes from people.

Interference and adaptation

Quang Nam province has historically been an international trade gateway through the commercial port of Hoi An.

This place is also an early globalized urban area since the feudal period, early to absorb the spirit of democracy and people's awareness, freed from the constraints of feudal ideology that had dominated for thousands of years.

People in this land of "no rain yet, but already soaked in" have become sensitive to the new, the beautiful, the core of human culture; and have awakened human qualities - the inherent good nature - of human beings.

People often talk about the qualities that show the personality of Quang people such as: argumentative, arrogant, clownish, playful, active...

After all, these personality traits can be found in people anywhere, but in Quang Nam they are more prominent, especially the argumentative/argumentative nature.

“Quang Nam is argumentative” is an accurate conclusion of folklore from ancient times. It highlights the outstanding personality of the people of Quang, placed in comparison with surrounding localities such as Quang Ngai, Binh Dinh, Thua Thien and passed down for many generations, it becomes the unique quality/personality of people originating from this land compared to the whole country.

There is also a close relationship between sensitivity to new things, the desire to self-study to improve one's awareness and reasoning ability.

The spirit of self-study to improve oneself is a positive attitude of the people of Quang. Thanks to that, it creates a strong ideology, national pride, patriotism and a fierce attitude against foreign invaders.

And it is also thanks to understanding, thanks to knowledge that we become decisively straightforward, have a stubborn attitude, openly oppose injustice and irrationality; love beauty and create art; know how to apply the quality of humor in life and in art; and know how to commit ourselves to the end in both play and work, including the wanderings in artistic creation and actions committed to human ideals.

Giants of thought and action

The people who represent Quang culture are people who act for the benefit of humanity, leaving behind a good name for posterity, and are honored as "Quang famous scholars".

They are intellectuals, continuing the tradition of learning of Vietnamese culture from "Northern Scholars" but not stopping at the scope of learning, and only knowing how to think, knowing how to maintain a noble status, but also being people of action, knowing how to devote themselves to noble ideals, for the benefit of the community.

Acting for a defined goal or ideal, without half-heartedness but with a determined commitment to the end to approach the truth, with a resolute attitude, even though sometimes knowing that it may cost reputation/career and even life.

Quang people are straightforward, without any deviousness or embellishment to please others. Because of their straightforwardness and courage, Pham Phu Thu was able to admonish King Tu Duc; Phan Chau Trinh wrote the Seven-article Letter listing the seven crimes of King Khai Dinh that deserved beheading; or Phan Khoi openly wrote Criticism of the leadership of literature and art, criticizing stereotypes and mechanicalness...

Quang Nam is the birthplace of famous scholars, patriots who fought against foreign invaders and sacrificed for the country, or reformers, revolutionaries who wanted to bring a prosperous life to the people, peace to the country - "giants" in thought and action, whose life stories and deeds, although different, all left a good name for future generations.

They are the "Five Phoenixes Flying Together", "Four Heroes", "Four Heroes", "Four Tigers", "Three Talents"... - people with passionate patriotic cultural qualities who always take actions to dedicate themselves to the country.

It can be said that there are so many that it is difficult to list all the names of famous people who carry the cultural identity of Quang Nam. Each person contributes in a different field, and may have many different views, but all have positive meanings, expressing the humanistic spirit, contributing to the elevation of the cultural identity of Quang Nam.

New cultural center from the source of Quang land

Time is a witness of history. The movement of history always takes place under the strict and generous view of time.

If we want to have a cultural model for the future, we must start with people who know how to listen to the voices of the past.

The people who make up Quang culture are people of action, always striving and taking the lead in pursuing legitimate happiness and for the community's reason for living.

Therefore, to realize the fundamental nature, one must be sensitive, open-minded, and accept differences, to find the truth from the past to guide the future.

Quang culture is facing a new opportunity, a shift in perspective towards the center of Da Nang. The new era opens a new cultural center.

With a political center full of economic potential, social and cultural institutions will also have many positive changes and developments. The new center, the new institutions will certainly produce new models of cultural people.

Today's cultural planners will have a clear view of the development of the future city, on the basis of inheriting, thoroughly exploiting and promoting the quintessence of the past, in a steady mindset with strong economic potential, will certainly create many favorable mechanisms and opportunities for cultural development.

It is also the culture of Quang Nam, after nearly six hundred years of development, the new cultural center from Da Nang will radiate new light, imbued with the inherent human nature of the land and people of Quang Nam.
