People of Cam Due commune check the damaged acacia forest after storm No. 10.

After storm No. 10, the Southern Ha Tinh Protective Forest Management Board had more than 5,316 hectares of production forest damaged; of which 3,808 hectares were unable to recover over 50%, the remaining were under 50%. The heavily damaged areas were mainly trees that had reached the age of exploitation, and had been affected by storm No. 5 1 month ago. The number of trees damaged under 50% were mainly newly planted trees under 3 years old.

Mr. Nguyen Ngoc Lam - Head of the Management Board of the Southern Ha Tinh Protective Forest informed: "We did not have time to organize to overcome the consequences of storm No. 5, but it was devastated by storm No. 10, so our forest area suffered quite heavy damage. In addition to the natural forest area that has not been counted and evaluated, the unit has up to 5,316 hectares of production forest affected, of which about 60% is very heavily damaged. This not only causes great economic damage but also seriously affects the task of protecting and developing forests, improving the efficiency of forestry land use...".

Many areas of planted forests at the foot of Hong Linh mountain (in Hong Loc commune) were "wiped out" by storm No. 10.

Storm after storm, other state forest owners are in a similar situation. Mr. Nguyen Hai Van - Deputy Head of the Hong Linh Protective Forest Management Board informed: "Due to the same wind direction and the same area of influence as storm No. 5, storm Bualoi has caused a "double" impact on nearly 4,139 hectares of production forest. Because it was destroyed twice, about 700 hectares were severely damaged and need to be liquidated for replanting; the area damaged by less than 50% is expected to face many difficulties in care and recovery because the trees are very weak".

Storm Bualoi swept inland, sweeping away what was left after storm No. 5 in coastal forests and eastern mountain slopes. The localities with heavy damage were Song Tri, Hoanh Son, Vung Ang wards and the communes of Ky Xuan, Ky Van, Ky Khang, Ky Lac, Ky Thuong, Cam Due, Cam Hung, Cam Lac, Thach Khe, Loc Ha, Hong Loc, Nghi Xuan, Co Dam...

Mr. Hoang Kim Tuy - Head of the Economic Department of Thien Cam commune informed: "During storm No. 5, 115 hectares of production forest in the commune were damaged at a rate of 30 - 50%. But after the storms of storm No. 10, this entire area was basically "wiped out". Currently, we are mobilizing and guiding people to complete documents and procedures to quickly collect the land to minimize damage".

In the coastal mountains of Thien Cam commune, acacia trees were completely broken, leaving the hills bare.

After the natural disasters, forest growers are in dire straits due to the huge losses. Mr. Duong Van Ty in My Phu village (Cam Due commune) sadly said: “My family has nearly 30 hectares of acacia plantation, half of the area was affected in the previous storm, and in this storm No. 10, another 8 hectares were destroyed. Because the forest was damaged, prices dropped, costs increased, exploitation was difficult, and the loss rate when harvesting was up to 40-50%, my family suffered a loss of about 700-800 million VND.”

According to initial estimates, after storm No. 10, the entire province had about 32-35 thousand hectares of planted forests damaged (of which more than 28 thousand hectares were "double" affected by storm No. 5, so over 50% were damaged), causing economic losses of hundreds of billions of VND. Currently, State forest owners, forestry companies, the agricultural sector, local authorities, and forest growers are urgently counting and assessing the detailed situation to have specific treatment plans for each forest area and each type of forest.

Hundreds of hectares of planted forest in Ky Van commune were devastated after the storm.

Mr. Le Huu Tuan - Head of the Forest Use and Development Department (Ha Tinh Forest Protection Department) said: "In addition to the forest areas damaged by storm No. 5 which were "doubled" in impact, storm No. 10 also damaged hundreds of other hectares, causing more severe damage to forest growers. Currently, the department is urging and directing forest rangers and forest owners to inspect the situation and assess the current status of each specific area to promptly develop the most effective solutions. The department has also advised the Department of Agriculture and Environment to issue a document directing the overcoming of consequences; focusing on overcoming the shortcomings and limitations that occurred during storm No. 5 and speeding up the progress of collection and recovery."
