According to ABC News, thousands of people from many countries, including monks, nuns and people, attended the longevity celebration despite heavy rain in the town of Dharamshala, located in the Himalayas in the state of Himachal Pradesh, India.
In a solemn but warm atmosphere, His Holiness the Dalai Lama appeared in traditional robes, escorted by monks to the temple courtyard amid ceremonial music and applause.
The 14th Dalai Lama, whose real name is Tenzin Gyatso, is widely regarded by Buddhists as the embodiment of Buddhist compassion. Despite his global fame, he describes himself as a “simple Buddhist monk.”
In his birthday message, he stressed that he would continue to pursue commitments to promoting human values and religious harmony.
This year's birthday celebrations mark a week of activities honoring the spiritual role and contributions of His Holiness the Dalai Lama.
He expressed hope to live to 130 and insisted that the choice of successor should be based on long-standing religious traditions.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi sent his congratulations, calling the Dalai Lama “an enduring symbol of compassion, patience and moral discipline.”
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio also sent his best wishes to the Dalai Lama and praised him as an inspiration for “ peace , solidarity and altruism”.
Hollywood actor Richard Gere, a longtime Buddhist, was also present at the Dalai Lama's birthday celebration and expressed his admiration for the Tibetan Buddhist spiritual leader.
“He was one of the most extraordinary human beings who ever walked this planet,” said actor Gere.
The 14th Dalai Lama ascended the throne in 1939 at the age of four and has lived most of his life in exile in India.
For over 70 years, he has been seen as a symbol of Tibetan culture and the spirit of perseverance in preserving identity in the Tibetan community worldwide .
