Under a draft agreement with the government, Germany's main telecom operators have agreed to remove components made by Chinese manufacturers Huawei and ZTE from their core networks - the most sensitive part of mobile networks - by the end of 2026, people familiar with the deal told the Wall Street Journal.

The software system that handles communication between devices on the wireless network will be free of Chinese components by the end of 2029, the sources said. They stressed that the government and operators have not yet signed a final agreement and some details could change in the coming days.
A German Interior Ministry spokesman said a decision had been made on steps to protect key parts of the country's 5G wireless network but declined to elaborate.
Analysts say the decision will gradually put Germany on the path of other countries in Europe, from Britain to Sweden and the Baltic states, that have banned Chinese components from their telecommunications networks.
However, they stressed that the move was late and largely based on terms set by German telecoms operators, some of which have threatened to seek compensation for additional costs related to the ban on Huawei and ZTE components.
“It looks like Germany is doing what the UK did, but four years later,” said Noah Barkin, senior adviser at research firm Rhodium’s China Practice.
Barkin said the deal’s timeline suggests most Chinese components will only be removed when they reach the end of their useful life and need to be replaced. Deutsche Telekom, the country’s largest carrier, said it has no Chinese hardware in its core network.
Chinese components will account for 59% of Germany's 5G radio access network by 2022, compared with 41% in the UK, 17% in France and 0% in Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia, according to data from Strand Consult, an independent telecoms research group.
