A group of amateur archaeologists in Denmark, called “Team Rainbow Power”, set up a search in a field in the city of Vejen in Jutland. Using metal detectors, they stumbled upon the largest hoard of ancient Viking gold.

The seven necklaces, six of which are gold and one of which is silver, date back to 900 AD, according to the National Museum of Denmark. Weighing in at a total of 900g, they are the largest Viking gold hoard ever discovered in the country.

Marie Aagaard Larsen, one of the archaeologists, said she found the first necklace after searching the field for about 10 minutes. Larsen, her husband Christian Nedergaard Dreioee and close friend Noergaard Pedersen then discovered more gold necklaces.

After collecting these artifacts, they asked Lars Grundvad, an expert at the Sønderskov Museum, to help them appraise them. Grundvad said that two of the seven necklaces were made in the Jelling style associated with the nobility in Viking society.

Peter Pentz, a Viking expert at the National Museum of Denmark, said the necklaces could have been gifts from Viking kings to loyal subjects or allies. They could have been buried in a ritual or buried by someone for safekeeping.
