Nearly 300 million people need humanitarian assistance in 2024

On December 11, the United Nations (UN) called for 46 billion USD in funding for 2024 to push back the humanitarian crisis globally, especially in the occupied territories of Palestine, Sudan and Ukraine.

Nearly 300 million people will need humanitarian assistance next year due to conflict, climate change and economic problems, the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) said. This includes 74.1 million people in East and Southern Africa, most of whom are affected by the Sudan crisis.

In its annual assessment of global humanitarian needs, OCHA said the humanitarian system was facing a major financial crisis, with just over a third of the $57 billion it had earmarked to deliver aid last year funded. It described it as “the worst funding shortfall in years”.

Mr. Griffiths affirmed that the Middle East region in general, including the Gaza Strip and the West Bank, are the areas with the greatest needs, but people in Ukraine are also facing difficulties and need attention and help.
