In some areas, wholesale prices of tomatoes, a traditional staple of Indian cuisine , rose 288% to 140 rupees ($1.70) per kilogram on July 7. Retail prices are even higher, prompting many to cut back on consumption. In New Delhi, tomatoes cost more than petrol (96 rupees per liter).

Due to the sharp rise in tomato prices, fast food chain McDonald's restaurants have decided to remove tomatoes from their burgers and wraps menus in India.

Tomato prices will fall in August when the harvest begins, and prices will rise again in October and November when production is slow, said Rohit Kumar Singh, deputy director general of consumer affairs at India's Ministry of Food.
