World gold prices fell slightly after a sharp increase above 3,400 USD/ounce in the US trading session (night of July 21). World gold fell to 3,393 USD/ounce. Gold demand increased sharply when the USD weakened along with the decline of US Treasury bond yields when they fell 2.6 basis points to 3,854%. Meanwhile, the yield on 10-year Treasury bonds fell 5.7 basis points to 4,366%. The demand for safe havens increased further when escalating trade tensions between the US and major trading partners increased market instability.

Recent statements by Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick have added urgency to ongoing trade negotiations. While expressing optimism about reaching a deal with the European Union, Lutnick stressed that the August 1 tariff deadline is a “hard deadline” for negotiations.
