Journey to bring Vietnamese science to international level

Prof. Dr. Tran Xuan Bach has made important contributions to health and science. His research focuses on health economics, health systems and digital health, with the goal of increasing access to health care services for vulnerable groups. At the same time, he is a pioneer in applying cost-effective health models, contributing to optimizing health systems and improving response capacity to global health challenges, especially in developing countries.

In the field of HIV/AIDS, Prof. Dr. Tran Xuan Bach has conducted many studies on the cost-effectiveness of medical interventions, thereby clarifying the economic, social, psychological and behavioral barriers to the expansion of new medical technologies such as vaccines or treatment therapies. These results have contributed practically to the control of the HIV/AIDS pandemic in Vietnam.

In addition, he is interested in building decision analysis models in health technology assessment and policy making, especially in the field of addiction. His research has provided an important scientific foundation for effective intervention programs, minimizing the negative impact of addiction on society.

In the field of mental health and behavioral medicine, Prof. Dr. Tran Xuan Bach has conducted many studies on the cost-effectiveness of psychological and behavioral interventions to improve the quality of life of patients. These results help determine appropriate intervention strategies and at the same time add reliable data for policy making in the field of mental health.

With his expertise in health economics, he has developed analytical models to support decision-making in health technology assessment, helping to determine the cost-effectiveness of new technologies and support their implementation in practice. In parallel, he has also participated in research to strengthen health systems, build effective service models and improve system capacity, especially in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic.

In 2023, his contributions were honored by the ISPOR Association, the world's largest organization in health economics, with the Outstanding Research Award. In addition to his professional work, Prof. Dr. Tran Xuan Bach is also a member of the Executive Committee of the Ho Chi Minh Communist Youth Union (2017-2022), Vice President of the Vietnam Youth Union (2019-2024). He received 3 Certificates of Merit from the Central Committee of the Ho Chi Minh Communist Youth Union for Awards at the Science and Technology Conference for Youth of Vietnam Medical and Pharmaceutical Universities: Excellent Prize (2004), Third Prize (2012), Second Prize (2016).

Persistently explore value for humanity, rather than seeking fame

Prof. Dr. Tran Xuan Bach is a former student majoring in Mathematics and Information Technology, High School for Gifted Students in Natural Sciences, Vietnam National University, Hanoi (1999-2002 course). Graduated as Valedictorian from the University of Public Health in 2006, he became a lecturer at the Institute of Preventive Medicine and Public Health, Hanoi Medical University.

The motto that Professor Tran Xuan Bach persistently pursues is "pay attention and do every little thing carefully".

After that, Tran Xuan Bach completed his PhD program at the University of Alberta, Canada after 2 years of study with all absolute scores and excellently defended his thesis with the topic: "Cost-effectiveness of combining antiretroviral treatment and methadone maintenance treatment for HIV/AIDS patients addicted to opioids".

Having achieved many successes, Professor Tran Xuan Bach does not want to talk much about himself, especially his achievements and awards.

He once shared that he was somewhat reserved with beautiful words like “outstanding”, “successful” or “talented”. To him, those words were sometimes like a drug that easily caused illusions. Even when receiving awards or recognition, he only considered them as a spiritual encouragement at certain milestones to continue moving forward.

The motto he persistently pursued was “pay attention and do every little thing carefully”. He also applied this same philosophy in training the younger generation.

According to him, the core of the scientific path is not in the title, but in the aspiration to discover the values necessary for humanity. The stories he told to his students, from unqualified professors to great people like Marie Curie, all had one thing in common: perseverance, effort, and aspiration to discover the values necessary for humanity, rather than recognition and fame.

Sharing about being in the top 10,000 globally influential scientists, Professor Tran Xuan Bach said that the rankings are for reference only, not an absolute measure to attach to individuals, and only have "limited" value in each specific situation or certain field.

For highly applied industries such as Medicine, Science - Technology, or Production - Business,... there are many criteria and perspectives that complement each other, are dialectical and selected over time.
