How does Hanoi recruit high quality 6th grade students?

VnExpressVnExpress10/04/2024

High-quality secondary schools recruit students from outside their designated areas by reviewing academic records or organizing entrance exams.

In the guidelines issued on April 9, the Department of Education and Training allows public secondary schools recognized by the City People's Committee as high-quality to enroll 6th graders outside their designated areas. If the number of students registering exceeds the quota, the school can consider admission based on academic records, awards or combined with exams.

To consider admission, schools proactively develop a scoring formula, based on the student's primary school learning and training results and priority areas. Admission scores are calculated on a 10-point scale.

If the entrance exam is combined, the admission score is the total admission score and the exam score multiplied by two. In which, the admission score is based on the student's academic record and priority status; and the test score is the total of all exams, each exam is calculated on a scale of 10.

The Department noted that the content of the tests mainly covers the 5th grade curriculum, in multiple choice or essay format with a test time of no more than 60 minutes per subject. High-quality secondary schools proactively develop plans, propose test subjects and time of organization, then report to the Department of Education and Training for approval by the District People's Committee.

"Schools choose a reasonable testing time and complete enrollment no later than July 12," the instructions stated.

Currently, Hanoi has a number of high-quality secondary schools including Nam Tu Liem, Le Loi (Ha Dong district), Cau Giay, Thanh Xuan. These schools often organize entrance exams for grade 6, which take place in mid- and late June every year.

Previously, the capital also recognized the secondary school system (Ams2) of Hanoi - Amsterdam High School for the Gifted as a high-quality school. But according to the request of the Ministry of Education and Training , this system must stop enrolling students this year.

In the 2024-2025 school year, Hanoi will have 246,000 students entering grade 6, an increase of 58,000 compared to the previous year. According to the Department's plan, secondary schools must complete issuing admission codes to parents before May 31.

If after July 18th the assigned quota has not been met, schools must report to the Department for additional recruitment. The list of admitted students will be updated no later than July 23rd.
