Creating livelihoods for people

After many years of efforts, up to now, more than 60 hectares of mangrove forest outside the Van Uc river mouth adjacent to sea dike 3 in Hung Thang commune have grown green and lush, becoming an attractive destination for tourists in the countryside eco -tourism route, creating an effective wave shield against storms, sea winds and waves, protecting the dike from natural disasters.

This forest also provides livelihoods for many local people. Mr. Do Cong Thoan’s family in Hung Thang commune was assigned by the government to manage and take care of 13.5 hectares of forest. Over the years, this forest area has helped his family have a more stable life thanks to the exploitation of natural aquatic resources from the forest.

Like Mr. Thoan, many households in Hung Thang commune are assigned to manage, protect and exploit mangrove forests, creating a more stable livelihood for many family members.

According to the Department of Agriculture and Environment, up to now, the whole city has developed many afforestation projects in localities such as Cat Ba, Do Son, Duong Kinh, Tien Lang, Chi Linh, Kien An. Currently, the afforestation projects are developing well, creating ecological landscapes for the city, livelihoods for local people and contributing to natural disaster prevention, especially for mangrove forests along rivers and coasts.

After the merger, Hai Phong city has a total forest and forestry land area of more than 33,096 hectares. However, due to the development and implementation of investment projects serving socio -economic development and natural disaster prevention, some forest areas in the project implementation area have been affected and narrowed.

To overcome the above limitations in order to continue developing and improving forest productivity and quality, Hai Phong city continues to implement 5 afforestation projects in localities. The focus is on supplementing and restoring coastal mangrove forests in Cat Ba, Do Son and some exploited forest areas.

Projects that have been and are being implemented include: Coastal Forest Restoration and Development Project in Cat Ba archipelago, Hai Phong city, period 2016 - 2020; Forestry Modernization Project and Coastal Resilience Enhancement Project; Forest Planting Project to replace forest area converted to other uses in 2018; Forest planting project to replace mountainous forest area when carrying out site clearance for the Project to build a memorial for martyrs in Kien An ward on Thien Van mountain; Mangrove planting project to return the recovered forest area for the Project to invest in upgrading and expanding the cross-island road Cat Hai - Cat Ba (Cai Vieng - Moc Trang section).

Currently, the city and the Department of Agriculture and Environment have assigned the Project Management Board for Investment in Transport and Agricultural Works to be the investor and coordinate with localities to implement the projects. Accordingly, 50 hectares of additional mangrove forests will be planted to return the forest area recovered for the Investment Project to upgrade and expand the Cat Hai - Cat Ba cross-island road (Cai Vieng - Moc Trang section); 60 hectares of additional mangrove forests will be planted in the Do Son 1 sea dyke area and some forest areas on Thien Van hill, Kien An ward.

Mr. Bui Quang Hoang, Deputy General Director of the Hai Phong Traffic and Agricultural Project Management Board, informed that the forestation projects have been and are being implemented on schedule and according to plan, and have received high support from local people.

According to Deputy Director of the Department of Agriculture and Environment Vu Ba Cong, in parallel with focusing on developing 5 more afforestation projects, the agriculture and environment sector has strengthened the inspection, management and protection of forests, promptly prevented and strictly handled acts of forest exploitation, deforestation, exploitation of forestry land, illegal trading, transportation and trading of forest products and seafood, not in accordance with the law.
