The effectiveness of organic rice production model in Cam Hieu commune

In the 2023-2024 winter-spring crop, the Quang Tri Agricultural Extension Center cooperated with Quang Tri Trading Corporation Joint Stock Company (Quang Tri Trading Corporation) to implement the model of "Organic rice production using tray seedlings and transplanters linked to product consumption" at Hieu Bac Cooperative, Cam Hieu Commune, Cam Lo District, on an area of 8 hectares, with 80 participating households. The model uses ST25 rice variety with high quality, yield and grade.

To implement the model, the Agricultural Extension Center and Quang Tri Trading Corporation cooperated with Cam Hieu Commune and Hieu Bac Cooperative to select suitable fields, production areas adjacent to each plot, with each household producing an average of 500 m2 or more. The Agricultural Extension Center supported 50% of seeds and materials.

Quang Tri Trading Corporation provides a full package of input services for production, allowing people to pay 50% of the service in advance and deduct at the end of the season. Technical staff organized 2 training courses to guide the technical process of organic rice production using seedling trays and transplanters. The model implementation process was carried out in accordance with technical requirements. Rice was transplanted from January 11-12, 2024, the seedlings were 2.5-3 leaves, 400 trays/ha, equivalent to 50 kg of seeds/ha.

The implementation model is in line with the policies of the province and district as well as the general orientation of the agricultural sector and in line with the aspirations of the people. Using Sepon organic fertilizer and nutritional products, fermented herbs, spraying products by drones throughout the care process. Do not use chemical fertilizers, chemical pesticides, herbicides. Scientific irrigation regime, suitable for the development needs of rice plants.

Using products such as fish protein, fermented stem water, bone calcium phosphate, eggshell calcium... instead of chemical fertilizers helps the rice plants to be strong, limiting harmful pests. Chicken egg and milk products supplement minerals and nutrients for delicious rice grains, firm rice grains, low rate of broken rice, products that meet organic standards. In addition, using herbal products such as ginger, chili, garlic, tobacco instead of pesticides helps maintain the field ecosystem, products do not have pesticide residues.

Spraying by drones has limited movement in the fields, reduced labor, and sprayed more evenly and concentratedly. Throughout the crop, the rice plants grow healthily, with fewer pests and diseases than in conventional fields. The expected fresh rice yield is about 65 quintals/ha, with Quang Tri Trading Corporation purchasing the output at a price of 13,000 VND/kg of fresh rice, bringing farmers an income of nearly 85 million VND/ha, a profit of nearly 37 million VND/ha, twice as high as rice produced by conventional farming.

According to the leader of Cam Hieu Commune People's Committee, through the implementation process, the locality realized that this is a model that brings high economic benefits to farmers. In addition, rice production according to organic farming processes has contributed to soil improvement, bringing a harmonious ecological environment in the fields. In the coming time, the Commune People's Committee will have a direction to maintain the existing organic rice area and propose to the superiors to continue to support the maintenance of the organic rice area to an area of over 20 hectares.

In addition to increasing productivity, quality, efficiency and competitiveness of products, the implementation of the model has raised awareness, changed the farming methods of people in organic and sustainable rice production, ensuring safe products, the country's environment is not polluted, contributing to protecting the environment, the field ecosystem, suitable for adapting to current climate change.

The model brings great confidence to farmers in joint ventures and linkages in production activities in general and clean agricultural production in particular. Creating linkages in sustainable production, enhancing the value of the rice chain, increasing farmers' income.
