Coach De La Fuente: "Spain cannot be compared with the golden generation of 2008"

Speaking at a press conference before the match with Albania at 02:00 on June 25 at Dusseldorf Arena (Germany), coach De La Fuente said: "We still have a long way to go if we want to catch up with that generation, because they won the Euro and World Cup. The whole team must improve in every position, although saying this still has some negative aspects.

We want to win every game and of course I believe in the 26 players and always want to have the strongest starting line-up. All players have the opportunity to play at Euro 2024 and perform at a high level."

Spain dominated world football with the Euro 2008, World Cup 2010 and Euro 2012 championships with their charming ball control style of play. Captain Iker Casillas, Sergio Ramos, Iniesta, Xavi, Xabi Alonso, David Silva, Fernando Torres and Cesc Fabregas are the ones who won all three of the above noble titles.

However, in the following tournaments, when many stars left the team and the ball possession style became outdated, Spanish football no longer achieved success. At Euro 2024, Spain impressed when they beat Croatia 3-0 and Italy 1-0, they were considered the top candidate for the championship.

However, coach De La Fuente is still cautious: "Many teams at Euro 2024 have not shown their full strength. I don't think we have seen the true quality of many opponents.

Some teams have yet to reach their full potential. The upcoming Round of 16 promises to be fierce and there is no room for error. That is the stage where we will see the full strength of the teams."

For his part, Albania coach Sylvinho highly appreciated Spain: "I don't think there is a difference in quality between the first team and the reserve players of Spain. Even their second team can go to the final of Euro 2024 and be a strong candidate for the championship."
