Coach Pep Guardiola clearly stated the reason why Man City lost the FA Cup final

(Dan Tri) - Coach Pep Guardiola admitted that the reason Man City lost 1-2 to Man Utd in the FA Cup final last season was because the players were still drunk.

Man City suffered their first defeat in all competitions in the 2024-2025 season when they lost 1-2 to Tottenham Hotspur in the League Cup in the early morning of October 31.

"It's been a long time since Man City suffered a defeat. We were a bit drunk when we played in the FA Cup final last season. But the important thing is that we haven't lost until today," coach Pep Guardiola said after losing to Tottenham in the early morning of October 31.

A week before the FA Cup final on 25 May, Man City celebrated wildly after winning a record fourth consecutive Premier League title. The team then spent a lot of time partying and some players continued to drink for days afterwards.

This has affected the training and health of some key Man City players. Jack Grealish, who is said to be the leading player in the partying, had to sit on the bench in the FA Cup final.

First-half goals from Alejandro Garnacho and Kobbie Mainoo were enough to give Man Utd a 2-1 win despite Man City applying constant pressure in the second half.

"It was my fault, I didn't plan the game well that day. Of course in football there are wins and losses, but my players didn't give up and they always wanted to move forward," added coach Pep Guardiola.

Defeating Man City helped coach Ten Hag keep his seat at Old Trafford. The Dutch strategist had a disappointing season when leading Man Utd to an 8th place finish, early elimination in the Champions League group stage and the fourth round of the League Cup.

Winning the FA Cup prompted Man Utd to extend coach Ten Hag's contract for another year. However, the "Red Devils" officially sacked the Dutch coach after losing 1-2 to West Ham on October 28 and the Manchester club dropped to 14th place in the Premier League rankings.
