Experts and managers discussed at the scientific workshop "Religion and Art: Theory and Practice" on September 26 in Ho Chi Minh City.
In particular, many papers delved into Buddhist thought in reformed opera and drama, such as: "Prince Ajatashatru", "The Ferry of Destiny", or the value of religious music through the research of Tran Ngan Ha, Nguyen Thi Thuy, and Vu Minh Thu were also discussed.
The above mentioned contents demonstrate the unceasing creativity of artists in Ho Chi Minh City when they aim to compose and stage works and religious figures to serve the public, thereby helping community life to develop more and more.
Parallel relationship
In the opening remarks, the Organizing Committee of the conference emphasized: "Throughout history, religion and art have always gone hand in hand, both reflecting and nurturing the spiritual life of people. If religion brings a system of spiritual values, art is the means of expression, dissemination, helping those values to be imprinted in the memories and emotions of humanity.
Not only stopping at spiritual values, this connection also affirms the role of religion and art as two pillars shaping culture, identity and humanity in modern social life.
Dr. Duong Hoang Loc - Director of the Religious and Development Research Program, Institute of Social Sciences and Humanities - said: "Art has the ability to bring abstract and distant religious ideas closer and more easily perceived by the public through works of art, and Ho Chi Minh City is a place with many stages and large art playgrounds to stage works of art in the right direction."
People's Artist Trinh Kim Chi, Vice President of the Ho Chi Minh City Theater Association, said: "Religious plays and dramas not only convey spiritual values but also reflect the Vietnamese people's aspiration to live a good and beautiful life. This is an artistic land that needs to continue to be exploited."
Experts say that religion and art are different but have a common point of meeting in humanity. Bringing religious art into education will help the younger generation to nurture spiritual depth and social responsibility.
