Iowa Attorney General Brenna Bird, in a lawsuit filed in state court in Polk County, accused TikTok and its Chinese parent company, ByteDance, of being dishonest about the prevalence of drug-related content, nudity, alcohol and profanity on their platforms.

"TikTok has left parents out of control," Bird said. "It's time to shine a light on TikTok for exposing young children to objectionable material like pornography, self-harm, illegal drug use, and worse."

With this allegation, Iowa is seeking financial penalties and a ban from TikTok.

TikTok said it “has industry-leading protections for teens, including parental controls and time limits for those under 18. We are committed to addressing industry-wide challenges and will continue to prioritize community safety.”

TikTok CEO Shou Zi Chew will be among the social media CEOs testifying before the US Senate Judiciary Committee on online child sexual exploitation on January 31.
