To increase pressure on Hezbollah forces in Lebanon, the Israeli army announced on August 10 that it was conducting "limited, localized and targeted operations" in southwestern Lebanon, after announcing similar operations in the southeastern border area.

On the same day, Iran warned Israel against any attack on Iran, a week after Iran fired a barrage of missiles at Israel in response to Israeli military action in Lebanon, causing concern in the Middle East.

Israel is weighing options to respond to Tehran's ballistic missile attack last week. Israeli officials say Iranian oil facilities could be hit, a serious escalation that could send global oil prices soaring.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi said any attack on Iranian infrastructure would be met with retaliation, while warning Israel against attacks on his country.

Iran's ISNA news agency reported that Mr. Araqchi will visit Saudi Arabia and other countries in the Middle East from October 8 to discuss regional issues and efforts to stop Israel's "crimes" in Gaza and Lebanon.

Tensions in the Middle East flared a year ago after the Palestinian militant group Hamas launched an attack on southern Israel, leading to a series of Israeli ground and air operations in Lebanon and direct Iranian attacks on Israeli military facilities.

The UN special coordinator for Lebanon and the head of the UN peacekeeping mission in the country said on October 8 that their repeated calls for restraint had “fallen unheeded” in the year since gun battles began between Hezbollah and Israel.

"Today, after a year, the near-daily gun battles have escalated into a relentless military campaign whose humanitarian impact is nothing short of catastrophic," the joint statement said.
