Jozani-Chwaka Bay National Park

Jozani-Chwaka Bay National Park is the only national park in Zanzibar, covering an area of approximately 50 km². The park was established in 1965 and has been recognized by UNESCO as a World Natural Heritage Site. It represents an important ecological area with diverse habitats, including subterranean forests, coastal forests, grasslands, mangroves and salt marshes.

Jozani-Chwaka Bay National Park is home to the red colobus monkey - a species endemic to Zanzibar and many other endangered species such as the Aders' gazelle, the Zanzibar servaline, and the Zanzibar leopard. The park is also home to many rare bird species.

Ngezi Forest Reserve

Located at the northwestern tip of Pemba Island in the Zanzibar archipelago, Ngezi Forest Reserve is an important ecological area of dense tropical rainforest. Established in 1959, the reserve covers 1,440 hectares and is the last remnant of the virgin forest that once covered Pemba Island.

The reserve comprises rainforest, riverine forest and maquis scrub. It is particularly noted for its fauna, including the endemic Pemba flying fox, Zanzibar vervet and red colobus monkeys, blue antelope, Pemba scops owl, feral pig, and mongoose. Ngezi Forest is also home to many bird species including Hadada ibis, African falcon, Pemba white-backed vulture, etc.

Kiwengwa/Pongwe Forest Reserve

Kiwengwa/Pongwe Forest Reserve located on the north-eastern coast of Unguja, about 20km from Stone town, is recognized as an important biodiversity centre in the area.

This is home to endemic species such as the red colobus monkey, Aders's gazelle; 47 bird species including many rare species such as the sykes warbler, hornbill, Zanzibar green sombre... and other animals such as the green monkey, Sunni gazelle and many species of snakes.

The reserve also boasts over 100 species of plants, many of which have medicinal properties. In addition to its diverse ecosystem, the reserve also features coral caves that represent unique geological features, containing stalactites, stalagmites and providing shelter to many species of birds, bats, etc.
