Mason Mount scored in MU's 2-0 win over Sunderland. |
In the early autumn rain in Manchester, fans at Old Trafford saw again the image of a "Red Devil" who knows how to play football with confidence and a desire to win. The 2-0 victory over Sunderland in round 7 of the Premier League on the evening of October 4 was not an earthquake, but it was enough to kindle hope that Ruben Amorim's journey of rebirth is gradually improving.
The return of rhythm and identity
Manchester United entered the game in a completely different spirit than in previous rounds. Mason Mount, whose form had been questioned, was a bright spot, moving flexibly, constantly moving into the middle to create pressure. The opening goal in the 17th minute was just reward for a half in which he played the true “modern number 8”: energetic, moving intelligently and knowing how to appear at the right time.
Up front, Benjamin Sesko continued to prove that he is not only a “penalty box killer” but also a connecting center. The goal that sealed the 2-0 score showed his scoring instinct, but it was the wall-building and passing that opened up opportunities for his teammates that made the experts nod. Sesko is growing into the role that Amorim expected: a complete striker who knows how to sacrifice and shine.
What was more remarkable was the way Manchester United maintained their formation. The central defenders Leny Yoro - De Ligt and Luke Shaw created a solid wall, while new goalkeeper Maarten Lammens had a solid debut. He read the situation well, reacted quickly and especially entered and exited appropriately - details that fans have not seen from this position for a long time at Old Trafford.

On the right wing, Bryan Mbeumo was a nightmare for the Sunderland defence. His pace, pressing and tenacity stretched the opposition defence. Amad Diallo was also a sharp drill, dribbling with technique and confidence - although he didn’t score or assist, his performance was enough to earn him the praise of “brilliant as a goal”.
The only negative point was Diogo Dalot - who was a bit out of sync with the rest, especially in the second half. But overall, Manchester United played organized, disciplined and energetic football - something that has been rare since the start of the season.
Win to believe – but it takes more than one good game
Manchester United’s first half against Sunderland was a smooth symphony, but the second half had a familiar slump. Amorim was right to be pleased with the three points, but he also understood the persistent problem: United often fall off after the first 30 minutes. If the “Red Devils” want to really get back in the race, they must learn to maintain the tempo, not just flare up for a moment.
However, the victory over Sunderland was not only a point, but also a morale booster. A team that had been under suspicion found a smile again. Names like Mount, Sesko, Mbeumo, Amad or Lammens showed that they were ready to fight for the red shirt. And above all, Ruben Amorim - who had been under pressure to be fired - temporarily saved himself with reasonable, neat and new-energy football.
If this is the start of a winning streak, no one at Old Trafford will be talking about crisis anymore. If this is just “a beautiful evening”, at least Manchester United have reminded the Premier League - they are still here, still know how to win, and still have the pride of a former ruler.
