Water samples from the area where sea bass died in Thach Son commune (Thach Ha, Ha Tinh ) were sent to the Northern Center for Environmental Monitoring and Aquatic Diseases. Results are expected to be available in 3-4 days.

When will there be results on the cause of fish deaths on Nghen River?

Officers of the Ha Tinh Fisheries Department took water samples from three areas on the Nghen River to clarify the cause of fish deaths.

On the afternoon of October 6, the Ha Tinh Fisheries Department coordinated with the authorities of Thach Son commune (Thach Ha district) to take water samples from the Nghen river below the Do Diem sluice gate to investigate the cause of the mass death of 50 tons of barramundi raised in cages by people in Song Tien village, Thach Son commune, that occurred on the same morning.

The working group took water samples in 3 areas on Nghen River, including the section near Do Diem sluice gate, the middle of the river and the water in fish cages.

Water samples were contained in three plastic cans and sent to the Northern Center for Environmental Monitoring and Aquatic Diseases for analysis.

3 water samples were carefully stored in 3 2-liter plastic cans. During the sampling process, the working group of Ha Tinh Fisheries Department also tested the salinity, pH and alkalinity of the water samples in 3 water sampling areas.

Initial test results show that the three water samples analyzed by the working group have not detected any abnormalities.

Initial inspection showed that some basic indicators of the water source in the fish farming area did not detect any abnormalities.

However, according to Mr. Luong Sy Cong - Deputy Head of Aquaculture Department (Ha Tinh Fisheries Department), to get the most accurate results, the unit has contacted and sent water samples to the Northern Center for Environmental Monitoring and Aquatic Diseases (Aquaculture Research Institute I) for analysis to clarify the cause. It is expected that the results of water sample analysis will be available in 3-4 days.

Previously, on the morning of October 6, many households raising fish in cages in Song Hai village, Thach Son commune, Thach Ha district were shocked to see fish suddenly die.

According to statistics from the People's Committee of Thach Son commune, 53 households raising barramundi in more than 200 cages on Nghen river died with a total quantity of 50 tons. The dead fish had been raised for 1-3 years with each fish weighing from 0.7-2.5kg.

People raising fish in cages in Thach Son commune informed that before the fish died, Do Diem bara opened the sluice gate to regulate the water. However, on the morning of October 6, the discharge was large and the water was more cloudy than usual.

50 tons of sea bass of Song Hai village people died.

According to local people, the large amount of fresh water flowing from Do Diem river causes the environment in the cages to change suddenly, combined with the possibility of water pollution, causing the fish to go into shock.

As soon as the incident was reported, the commune mobilized human resources to support people in collecting fish from cages ashore and called on people to join hands in "rescuing" the dead fish to help reduce damage.

Local authorities sent forces to help people collect fish.

This is not the first time that fish in cages under the Do Diem sluice in Song Hai village (Thach Son commune) have died. Before the incident, the local authorities had announced, even advised, and encouraged people to harvest the fish that had reached their weight. However, the households still hesitated to sell them and tried to raise them for a while longer.
