The volume of goods passing through seaports increased sharply in the first two months of the year.

The volume of goods passing through Vietnam's seaports is about 750 million tons/year. In the first 10 months of the year, the volume of goods passing through seaports increased again.

Goods with growth trends include exports (estimated at 28.684 million tons, up 8%), imports estimated at 33.884 million tons (up 16%), domestic goods estimated at 48.593 million tons (up 4%) and transit goods unloaded estimated at 454 thousand tons.

Regarding container cargo, the volume of cargo passing through seaports in the first two months of 2024 is estimated at 4.054 million TEUs, up 27% over the same period last year. Of which, exports are estimated at 1.323 million TEUs (up 20%), imports are estimated at 1.252 million TEUs (up 19%) and domestic cargo is estimated at 1.478 million TEUs (up 40%).

January 2024 also witnessed the growth of cargo volume through seaports. Specifically, cargo volume in the first month of 2024 reached 68.716 million tons (excluding transit cargo not handled at the port), an increase of 43% over the same period in 2023. Cargo output in Teus reached 2.4 million Teus, an increase of 52%.

All types of goods showed an upward trend. Exports reached 17.383 million tons, up 29%. Imports reached 20.931 million tons, up 49%. Domestic goods reached 30.127 million tons, up 47% and transit goods reached 275 thousand tons.

The volume of goods passing through seaports by ships (excluding unloaded transit goods) in January 2024 reached 47.404 million tons, an increase of 45% over the same period in 2023. The volume of goods passing through by inland waterways reached 21.312 million tons, an increase of 38%.

According to the Vietnam Maritime Administration ( Ministry of Transport ), the growth rate of January is quite high compared to the same period because January 2023 is the Lunar New Year month, so the volume of goods is the lowest. Meanwhile, January this year is the month before Tet - the time when the volume of goods is usually the highest in the year because it is to prepare for Tet.

Along with the increase in cargo volume, the volume of container cargo through the port in January also increased by 51% compared to the same period in 2023.

In particular, areas with large container throughput such as Hai Phong, Ho Chi Minh City, and Vung Tau all recorded an increase of 40 - 60% compared to the same period last year.

The areas of Da Nang, Dong Nai, Nghe An, Dong Thap, and Can Tho all increased from 49 to 144% and no area had a decrease in the volume of goods passing through.
